Yes, this woman just didn't seem to understand that I was not customer service for Visa gift card. It was one of those Simon mall gift cards and she did say at one point, "well, you are in a Simon mall!"
The mall (the actual structure) might be owned by Simon, however, the stores in them aren't.
I hate those miserable things! They're the worst dam thing ever invented! I get the same problem EVERY SINGLE TIME! I have to constantly explain to the customer that if they try to run it through for more than what's left on the card, it automatically declines it! Do the morons know how much is left on the card?! Of course not, they never know! And I wind up having to play guessing games with them!
1 lady I had the other day had a $100 gift card and used $96.73 on it. She could've just left after that. No, she wants to use it up. So she goes and picks something else out, and guess what.... its more than the $3.27 left on the card. She asks me how much is on the card, and I had already told her twice. After discussing with her husband if she should still get the item, he finally gets fed up with her and tells her to use the gift card, and he will pay the remaining balance owed. Finally she leaves Good riddens
Wow I never knew there were still POS systems that were that archaic, everywhere that I know of, will take a gift card regardless of the ballance and automatically take it out and then ask for the remaining owing.
ie I have a $50 gift card with a balance of $25 on it and buy a $30 item, they take the gift card and swipe it without checking or asking anything and it takes out the remaining balance of $25 and then leaves $5 owing that I would pay by some other means. I sell gift cards at my store for dozens of different stores and I buy them from myself (since I turn a profit from them I use them to shop at other places when I go to them) and this has Never been an issue.

small note Mr. Customer - I think you missed the subject. No one is talking about STORE gift cards here, it's all about VISA and MALL gift cards. IE: they run like debit cards - if there ain't enough money, it declines. No POS system that I know of can give that info.

Oh, those prepaid gift cards are a major pain in the ass. There's about a 50% chance they'll work in our system. Which means if they work, that's all well and good, but if it doesn't...I've gotten so many calls about those. I can probably explain "funds held" in my sleep now (hell, for all I know I might, there's no way to tell if I talk in my sleep). I feel for the people; after all, for most of them, it's the only way they have to pay.
That being said, take normal SC behavior...and factor in that in those situations it's my job to tell them they don't have access to that money for the better part of a week.
