  • There's No Receipt And We Don't Sell It Here, But Sure, We'll Take It Back!

Another story from when I worked at the drugstore.

This man came in with a handheld electric can opener that we did not sell at our location. He didn't have a receipt for it, nor did he have the original box. He admitted he bought it three months ago, yet still insisted on a refund.

Three strikes and you're out, you would think.

But no. He insisted on a refund. Trouble was, with the absence of a receipt and the box, which, obviously, would have had a SKU, there was no way to tell just how much he would be getting back. All which was a moot point anyway, seeing that he was way past the 15 day refund policy.

Still, he put up a fight, insisting that he had bought the can opener from our drugstore. Which again, could be true, since it was a chain drugstore. But there was no way of telling that, because AGAIN, he did not have a box or receipt, and AGAIN, he went past the refund policy. Simply put: regardless of said policy, it was physically IMPOSSIBLE to give him the refund.

Which is exactly what I told him. Which he either was too stupid to comprehend, or too stubborn to accept. I think it was a little from column A and a little from column B.

Finally, after about 10-15 minutes of this verbal volleying, I got a manager, who told him the exact same thing I just had.

Mercifully, he stormed out when he realized he wasn't going to get his way.

At least he manager has a spine.

I think people....I don't know. I think they think it's as simple as opening the register and handing over the cash-nevermind that most registers don't have an 'Open Cash Drawer' button.....its....wow. I don't understand how people....huh.

Really. I get that with coupons-I can't just take your word, I have to scan it, otherwise it doesn't work. It just doesn't happen that way.

Then, if he had got his refund he would bitch about only getting store credit instead of his precious cash.

Can I borrow your manager? I wish mine had a spine...

Didn't cash registers, pre-computer, used to have a "no sale" key?

I thought for sure you were going to say that someone gave him a refund after all. It happened all the time at my last job. Small wonder the company went out of business.

Yep, once upon a time they did. However, that button couldn't tell the difference between a manager and a cashier. Now, most cash drawers have keys to lock them and have non-sale cash access limited to supervisors and/or managers.

You should have sent him to Wallyworld. You can bring in a ziploc full of cat vomit and claim you bought it in the electronics section for $19.95 and lost the receipt... and if you make enough of a scene, you'll walk out $20 richer.
