When I worked medical records at the psych hospital we had a very racist patient come in. Part of our procedure is that all patients need to have a History and Physical done when they come in and we have three doctors who come over and do them for us. That day we had the super-awesome Vietnamese doctor there (who was the super-awesome general practitioner for half the staff, including me), and the guy started screaming that he refused to be seen by *some rather nasty language that the nurses wouldn't repeat to me because they thought I was too young (21)*. So they call in our second doctor, who's white. Think it would all be okay then right? Nope. Doctor Two is a woman. She got yelled at for 'leaving her place in the kitchen with the babies'. So we called in Doctor Three. This time it's a white male. Patient is happy and gets his H&P done. Then the doc drops *his* bombshell. Doc Three is Jewish. Cue more ranting.

Two days of rants, threats against women staff and our black staff and I think we shipped his ass to state, where they got the *good* drugs.

The Communists thing is more of a schooling thing, then, no? I mean...depending on how old you were when you moved, I remember learning the Cold War etc...

And I've never really encountered racism here...but I'm South Texas, so maybe it's different when there's more whites...

I'm in Houston and have lived here for a year and a half. My first trip to texas (I was flown out for Prom) was about 4-5 years ago now.

The thing is, my parents brought me up to be aware of Racism in all it's insiduous forms, and to be aware of any slight racist tendencies in myself. So I've tried to crush them allto dust, hehe.

I just can't get how, in 2009, people are not only stupid enough to judge someone by their skin tone, but also stupid enough to shout about it...
God, he'd have hated it if V and H had been in. One is a hindu, the other is a muslim... both as British as I am...

Someone told me that it was a very common thing for people from India or Pakistan in the USA to run motels and hotels. It's kind of the cliche job for the community. I can't remember who told me. Is this true at all ?

Kind of like running corner shops in the UK - though there's also a particular thing with Patels running them (I don't know if they were always all one family but they pretty much seem to be now - that may have been more recent marriages though. I know someone invited to a big UK Patel wedding and it had 3 marquees which is big even by Indian wedding standards). And once lots of people start doing it, then it becomes particularly easy for other relatives to set up in same business - so they pass on equipment and mind each other's shops, share bulk orders etc.

Or in Wales where they had a whole thing of Italian people running these small shops / cafes. That pretty much died out but there's at least one tiny dull Welsh town left with a fish and chip shop that does awesome homemade icecream. At one point pretty much every substantial sized town there had one, and ice cream apart they weren't selling anything Italian...

I was once doing this job where I was helping someone who was somewhat Rascist, and also obsessed and terrified by the Nazis. I can't go into details but it linked to some childhood abuse, and while he didn't always act acceptably (though he was generally pretty "polite" when he didn't want to see people) it was linked to some pretty substantial mental health and personal issues.

But when I left they had to choose which of my colleagues got him... a black woman, or a german woman. They ended up having him seen by the new person replacing me even though they wouldn't normally have given her someone that difficult to deal with as one of her first clients. (He did NOT get to choose who he saw, but both my colleagues chose not to see him and force the issue).

I'm not sure how true it is... I know that in Salt Lake in particular there are a lot of businesses owned by people of Indian/Pakistani decent, not just hotels. There's also a lot of businesses owned by Greeks. A lot of businesses owned by Mexicans/Central Americans A lot of businesses owned by Mormons, a lot by Catholics, a lot by people of all faiths... I guess the point I'm making is that look hard enough and you can see a lot of any business run by a certain group and call it a cliche.

I don't get it. Is that 'laugh out loud' there because you can trust whites and it was silly of your grandparents to say? Or because calling a race untrustworthy is somehow funny? I'm a little confused.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say neither. It'd be because that's what Hobbs is.

I kinda have to agree with that. My last job at <Broken Hotel> was owned and run by a lovely gent from Pakistan. Nice guy, let me take care of the jerks. What fun times I had.

Also, "Patel" is a very common name. Like "Jones" or "Smith" so don't bother expecting them to be all related.

Ya know, I never really came upon racism until I moved out of the south (Yes, I see the irony in that) and to the western states (never even heard of communists until I.

What happened to the colour-blind people I grew up with? Did they get erased or something?

There is a very old saying that goes something like, "In the south everybody's a little racist but all there best friends are black. In the north*, everybody's against racism but they don't know a single black person."
I come from a family where my mom would kick people out of her house for using the N-word and moved to South Texas where my roommate used it constantly but played bass in an otherwise all-black blues band, hung out in black bars, and dated African American women all the time.
He never used it around them though...

Most people in the west are transplanted from the northeast (like me).

In the UK, it's newsagents and little shops. I know that sounds a bit racist, but I've lost count of the number of newsagents and little shops I've seen being run by Pakistanis. And run very well, I might add; the one down the road from me is hellishly efficient and is run by a family, so they get all the profits without having to pay employees.

I was born and grew up in South Texas, close to Houston. (And miss it every day.)
My cousins who were a few years older than me always told me horror stories about the African American students at school who were violent and into drugs, and how my cousins had to fight a lot. I love them dearly but they had some heavy stupid going. I never had any problems. But then if I had uttered some of that nonsense in front of my parents, I would have had my mouth slapped into next week!

I live in the Midwest US now. We have three hotels in the area. Two are owned by Patel brothers, and one by a guy from New York. One of the Patel hotels is a smaller one-story motel that is actually our next-door neighbor. They're awesome people. Granted, many of their residents leave something to be desired, but the hotel itself is nice. The other brother owns a larger, equally nice and successful hotel in town. The third one is a dump, with broken windows and trash all around that just screams "Joe's Crack Shop."

On the OP, that guy was a class A moron. I hope he gets blacklisted.
