I didn't even know there were Krogers in Texas. I thought it was an Ohio thing.

We would lose so much money if we didn't take those stuff as valid ids. Like it is probably the store turning a blind eye.

My local grocery store (Wegmans) has a chain-wide policy of 100% ID check regardless of age. (Actually I just submitted customer support feedback on that saying that I love the policy and thanking them for always checking my ID).

The mom & pop stores here sometimes check my ID, but if they ask to see it I am happy to show it. As I said in one of my threads, I take it as a compliment cos I'm 36.

Yeah and going out without an ID? Um. OK.... yeah I'll just drive to the store and try to buy alcohol! For the win!

To be fair, we do have a lot of people that walk to our store or take the bus. I walk to work so there's a slim chance they are just walking to the store and not actually driving. However, I doubt most of our customers are willing to walk here.

When I briefly worked in the jobs where ID-ing was an issue. I was trained that only Picture IDs were allowed, so a Passport is technically ok, but not if the person is an in state resident. Reason, the state DL cards were harder to fake than Passports as they are printed on paper and generally only required a typewriter and a small drop of a particular ink solvent to change. I know that isn't the case now, but I know that the idea of State ID over Passport is still in existence.

Hm, maybe the policy is different in different divisions or something... Cause as far as I know it's company policy to only take Texas ID or DL. So maybe it's only a SW Division thing.
No, it's a national thing I believe. Smith's (part of Kroger) in New Mexico wouldn't sell me alcohol either (I have TN license still). Neither would the Ingles (NOT part of Kroger) grocery stores in NC.

And, holy crap, SG15Z, you pwned Jester.

Nope their are Krogers in a lot of states. Those there's a bunch that are under different banners (like Smith's, Fry's, Dillons, etc.). Well I think the only stores that are exempt are the ones that have such a high number of people from other states and such. Though I don't know for sure as I only have experiance in like 5 Kroger stores and all of them where in the Houston area.

That's what Mrs. TGK and I will be using for ID when we go to Galveston in another week and a half. There are guidebooks that show the valid ID and DL's for every state--sounds like someone is going cheap.
The rule should apply at the Kroger down there too, but since Gavleston is a big tourist town they may be a little more laxed. I know many of the establishments are. Just be warned, it has improved a bit from the Hurricane last fall, but they're still not 100% down there. Have fun though! Avoid the beaches on the east side. They're are less tourists on the western beaches. Plus you can park right on the beach and don't have to pay or anything. So I highly recommend to West end beaches. The Public ones of course.

On the matter of the sucky customers, I hear you loud and clear.

Just tonight I had a customer who bought cigarettes. He's almost nineteen and I rather politely asked him if he was going to get his ID replaced-it expires next week.

He looked at me oddly and said, "Yeah. But it has a fourteen day grace period."

"I'm sorry, but I don't abide grace periods." I said, again, politely. "If I get an expired ID then there's no sale."

That's when the guy took it personally, calling me an asshole, threatening to call my manager. And all because I asked if he was planning to replace his ID soon.

It wasn't to be an asshole. I ask all customers whose ID's are within weeks or even months of expiring as a way to tell them that A: Yes I am paying attention and not just glancing at their ID's, and B: I absolutely will not take the ID if it is expired.

I don't care if it expired five minutes ago and the grace period is till after hell freezes over , an expired ID is an expired ID case closed.

Not an ID, but this is the second month in a row where I've worked on the overnight of the month changing.

Both nights we had people get rejected for expired cards at the pump, come in all blustery and pissy because 'our pumps aren't working' and suddenly deflate when we notice their card is ten minutes expired, or less. Yes, on 3/1 and 4/1, at 12:00 AM your card expires if the stated expiration date was 2/09 or 3/09. No, we cannot roll the clock in our system back three minutes for you to fill up.

                    Um, not exactly.

                    1. I always reserve the right to be completely and embarrassingly wrong.

                    2. I said the store may be violating the law. Having never lived in Texas and only worked there a few days total in my life, I don't pretend to be an authority on Texas law.

                    3. There is a huge difference between being wrong and being owned. I was wrong. Pure and simple. I'll admit when I get owned, but this was not one of those times.

We're aware of the post-Ike rebuilding. Moreover, we're taking a cruise out of that port, so we'll be there a day or two at most.

We are not allowed to do a return if the client's ID was expired. I have brought that to the attention of several people this year--not expired yet but will within the next month.

A store, bar or restaurant might or might not sell alcohol to a person with an out-of-state driver's license, military ID, or passport.
which sucks if you're from out-of-state & just visiting and of legal age to purchase alcohol.

I never understood the "Expired ID" thing. If the picture on it is me and you can clearly read the birthdate, what's the problem?

I mean just because the ID is expired doesn't mean my DOB is any different or that I look any different.

Security methods. They're usually updated every few years, so older licences are easier to forge. So if they take an expired ID, it's also one that's easier to fake.
