  • Oh you must have missed the first two signs

There is one reserved space in front of our store for UPS STORE CUSTOMER PARKING ONLY, as can be ascertained by any human of normal intelligence, because its posted on a sign directly in front of the space. Also, the curb for this singular parking space is painted a lovely shade of bright green with white letters proclaiming the space has a 15 minute time limit.

Despite the sign and the brightly painted curb, hordes of idiots park in our spot for hours on end and don't even come into the store.

We printed a nice fat stack of bright yellow papers with a polite note that reads:

This spot is reserved for UPS Store customers with a 15 minute time limit. The reason for this is that many people come in to our store with large packages to ship. We pay extra rent so that we may offer this courtesy. Please respect this in the future. Thank you! (smiley face an actual feature)

Pretty nice, right? I thought it sounded like a reasonable note to leave on someone's windshield. Its great watching their faces when they come back to their cars. Most look in the window at me guiltily before driving off. Some scoff and shake their heads and peel out. One guy I saw crumpled it up and threw it on the ground. Another lady stomped in and demanded to purchase a single postage stamp. When I rang her up she thrust the note at me and declared "Here, now you can give this to someone who really deserves it!"

But people still park there constantly. A co-worker crafted yet another sign that stands at eye-level to someone if they happen to be driving a normal-sized vehicle, and its right in front of the space, just beside the other sign, right on top of the green curb. There is literally NO WAY you can miss it.

A woman and her friend pulled into the space in a ford F-350. The woman driving pulled in so far her front wheel popped up onto the curb and the sign fell over backwards. Apparently she didn't even notice. Her friend did, because she got out of the passenger side door, crossed the front of the truck and STEPPED OVER the fallen sign, and both of them went into the department store on the other side of the parking lot.

I left the sign were it was on the sidewalk, and along with the standard polite yellow letter, I wrote an additional: "We have written down your license plate number and will notify parking enforcement should you ever park in this space again. Also you drove up on to the sidewalk and knocked over our sign. Please pick it up on your way out."

I didn't get to see her reaction but I'm hoping she was embarrassed.

And you know, I know its just a parking space. But COME ON. Also its a pain in the ass because if someone needs help unloading, I've gotta lock the store to leave and go help them because some douchebag was parked in the loading area.

That sucks. We get the same thing but with our Handicapped spaces. The problem is that they are usually out of there before law enforcement can arrive so they get away with it (which of course means "If I get away with it for a long enough period of time then it must be OK").

Back in the 1980s a certain store in this area had their own Denver boots. Anyone parking in their spaces and not coming into their store got booted. I think they charged $25 to remove the boot.

Our small strip mall has that problem where the Store is. The boss and one of the other long time tenants (A magic store!) are pissed at it. I walked by the MS one day and there were SIX neon yellow signs in his windows saying not to park there!

Last I saw, the boss and landlord were discussing No Parking, you will be towed type signs... 25 in all!

I dont blame them... I literally saw one of OUR customers boxed in by some guy with a truck who parked the wrong way perpendicular, and he had two other cars on his other side blocked off. I also constantly see people parking, then going and getting on the bus on the bus stop!

I'm going to start taking down tag numbers for the boss I think. This is OUR parking lot for OUR customers, not a park n ride!

Yep, my parking lot gets used as a park N ride all the time; always the same cars too. Heck though, if something happens to their car while they're sitting illegally overnight, it's not 'our' fault ... And of course there's a no overnight parking sign at every entrance, but OH! We must have engaged the Romulan Cloaking Device so of course you didn't see them!

And I love how people blame their inability to park/drive on the store. Yes. Because they must have some remote control over your steering column that made you hit that curb.

Embarrassment only happens to people who think they did something wrong.

                  Entitlement whores have NO shame.

So skip the nice notes, and go directly to towing, if you can. Only because setting their vehicles ablaze is probably illegal.

All the signs in the world won't help you, the only thing that will clear that space for your customers is a tow truck.
