I had one lady who came through my line and her total came up $10.01. Now usually I keep extra pennies in my till so I will give someone the penny when something like this happens and I would have given it to her except she demanded that I give her a penny. Her friend that was with her started digging through his pockets for a penny and she starts yelling at him that she spends thousands of dollars in this store and she deserved a penny and that I was going to give her a penny right now. Her friend just handed me a penny mouthed sorry and walked off. She grabbed her stuff and stormed out mumbling that she was mad that I had cheated her friend out of a penny.

Maybe I'm the odd duck here but I really don't get the concept of people expecting you to add to their purchase even if it is pennies.

You want said item, you pay for all of said item, or I no hand it over.
Please excuse me , I need to wander round the corner to scream now, before my head explodes.

I'm with you on this one, honestly, though I won't hold it against others. Only time I've ever helped out a customer was when I had loose change left at my till by previous customers (essentially a makeshift "take a penny" tray). That rounded change adds up quickly, and I don't intend to let the till be over or under by any amount if I can help it. I also don't carry money in my pockets while working; it's all back in my locker.

I don't care if they're short by a few pennies(penises lol). Most people don't set out to scam a store $0.01 at a time. Everyone makes mistakes.

I treat this kind of stuff the same way I treat me as a bartender comping drinks for people at my bar: Those who ASK for it are never the people who GET it. In other words, "No."

Now, at my bar, the bartender's tills only have change down to quarters. No dimes, nickels, or pennies. So when faced with an odd amount in change to give, I will usually round up to the nearest quarter (in the guest's favor, as I am not about to be yelled at for some asshole getting "cheated" out of a fucking nickel, or I will add the additional few cents from my pocket (as I always have spare change in my pocket).

But there are also times when I will round down, say, and give someone $4.50 if their change was $4.55. And it all balances out.

I do the same thing with my tips. If someone says "the rest is yours" and the rest includes, say, 82 cents, I will take 75 cents from the till. But of course the next time it happens, I'll take a full dollar. It balances.

But again, those who ASK for it never GET it.

You can probably thank all the "self esteem" building bullshit that goes on like it's gospel now.
I disagree. Generally, such self esteem programs teach people that they are valuable and good and worthy....NOT that they are actually better than other people, or deserve more.

Now, what the people who take these courses or read these books actually DO with the lessons taught therein is a whole 'nother ball of wax.

'S got nothign to do with the economy. I had this sort of thing happen all the time five, six, seven years ago.

People are just cheap or lazy sometimes. :P

Ditto my money stays in my locker or baring that my shoe.
If anyone else wants to help people out I applaud them.

I've learned from experience, for me it's a bad idea sod's law is on a first name basis with me.

I've only done it once when I worked an icecream job for a nice lady who was kinda short when bying icecream for her kids.

As there were a couple of kids, and I'd already done the ice creams.
I couldn't eat them[security cameras] or keep them, and saying to a littlie I'm not handing yours over but the other three are ok seemed a really bad idea.

So I had some of my busfare left over in my pocket and added it to the total.

Mother and kids were happy, I wasn't when the [choose your own two words here] behind her decided he didn't want his icecream at full price after I had done it and walked off with a sh@~*y faced grin.

I would like a "take a penny leave a penny" tray, though...
No, you won't. Oh my God. We've had people clean those out. Like, 37 cents worth.

At the 'Q, I'd take out most of the pennies and put them out of reach. If a penny was needed in a good cause, then I'd grab one.
                  I'm bringing disdain back...with a vengeance.

Oh, and your tool box called...you got out again.
