  • I Need to See Your ID

Yesterday, one of the checkers got a customer that wrote a check and it prompted for a phone # and ID. When I asked for ID, the customer told me that the checker already saw it. I told her that I needed to see it and she ended up giving it to me. The customer told me that she shops in the store all the time. I mentioned that all customers who write checks need to show ID at least once a year. I didn't mention that the employees also have to do that.

And a lot of times, stores have a policy that checks that are under number 300 need ID checked everytime. People used to get snippy about that where I worked. When people used to get offended by my asking for ID, I honestly didn't care at all. It was my job to do that.

That policy never made sense to me. When ordering cheques/checks you can specify the start number, I set mine at 006 because the trust company gave me 5 samples to use, but could have set it at 300 if I wanted.

And how many customers, especially the ones who can't keep a checkbook balanced, are going to know that? Even after they've been told? We're talking about people who will carefully study a sign reading, "Everything's a Dollar!" and then turn to somebody ask, "How much is this?"

That doesn't make sense. Although I wouldn't be checked now (next cheque in my book is 337), for about 3 years (until I ran out of that batch) I was crossing out the "19" in the date field. People who don't write many cheques can go a long time before reaching 300, and paperhangers can order their first batch starting above 300.

I have never been able to write a check without having to show ID and have my DL # taken down on the check. If I do write a check I have my ID out and ready to go.

It doesn't make sense, but the bottom line is:

People like the OP are just doing their job when they ask for the ID. We all know corporate makes up rules even stupider than this, knowing they don't ever have to deal with the fallout.

I have never, but NEVER, understood the big freaking deal about having to do something as simple as showing an ID. It literally takes 10 seconds. It just goes to show that EW/SC's will bitch about ANYTHING.

We had to get phone # and ID for every check, no matter what. I had regulars who wrote checks every time, and I still needed to get their info. Some of them would write it on the check themselves because they knew we would ask, but they still had their license out for me.

Yesterday, a customer came up to the service desk wanting to write a check but she didn't have her ID with her. I told her that she would need ID in case the register requested it and she told me she shops in the store all the time. She even requested a manager and the FEM was coming back from lunch then so I let her take over. She told the customer the same thing I did.

Where I work, ID must be shown for checks if the register prompts for it. This rule also applies to employees.

I don't understand why people get snippy about having to show ID when you write a check. The store is doing it for your and their protection. Your protection because it sort of prevents someone else from cashing your checks. Their protection because they may be on the hook for fraudulent checks.

I don't understand the "under a certain number" rule either. Because of that rule, I will never shop at Radio Shack again. One time I needed a battery for my watch, so I went into Radio Shack. It was Thursday and I get paid on Friday, I didn't have the money in my account but back then a couple days was enough float time. The battery was less than 10 bucks. so I start writing a check...they asked for my license...No problem and a credit card...Problem because I didn't have one at the time. Plus, if I remember correctly, they are not supposed to ask for a credit card as a form of ID anyway. I said I didn't have a credit card. and he said, "Well, I'd let it slide, but your check number is below 1000". So I said whatever....and left. Went down the road and got the same battery for less from another store. So because radio shack thought I'd stiff them on 10 bucks...I wont shop there again.

My store is the same way. No ID, no check. I might bend the rules a bit if it's someone I know who always writes checks, but only if they can rattle off their DL# and expiration date (I can't turn in the checks without ID/expiration/phone # written on them).

Our registers only prompt for ID if it's the first check they've written (or it's been more than 6 months), but we still have to have it.

Thankfully nobody has been real bitchy about it with me.. yet. I did get a pretty good bitch out from someone when I refused to take their check from California (I'm in Texas). It looked like she'd printed it on her computer too, looked completely fake and lacked any watermarks whatsoever. Even if it didn't look fake, we don't take out of state checks (technically we're not supposed to take out of area checks, but we get a lot of out of town customers).

Where I work, we're not supposed to take a check numbered under 200 (generally indicates a "new account" but not always). I had to turn away a check from a local attorney yesterday because 1)the number was #111 and 2)he'd opened this account out in California for while he was taking furthering ed classes. Glad he had the debit/credit card with him.

Where I work, it prompts for an ID every so often as well (I'm not sure if it's once a month or once a year), but I usually ask for it every time, and I write it on the check. We get a lot of contractors and business checks. So I ask every time because you never know if something could go wrong and they need to know exactly who used that check. I just like to cover myself.

Yesterday, a customer wanted to play the lottery. He looked young to me so I asked for ID. The customer told me that he comes in all the time. I told him that I still needed to see his ID.

Since I couldnt get through to the customer, I got my service desk coworker to help me out and even offered to watch the banking for her. To her, the customer didn't look young. She even told me that the customer told her how old he was. After the customer was taken care of, my service desk coworker came back into the cash room to finish the banking.
