Our registers only prompt for ID if it's the first check they've written (or it's been more than 6 months), but we still have to have it.
Our registers didn't prompt at all; we just had to write down the DL and phone#.

She even told me that the customer told her how old he was.
I could tell you I'm 22. Doesn't make it true. (...sigh...)

Yesterday, a customer wanted to play the lottery. He looked young to me so I asked for ID.

purp, i haven't been to a place where they didn't need to see an ID for a check; it just makes sense to get that info in case it bounces into sky and keeps going.

that cw is risking her job on a say so? she's either an idiot or has more faith in humanity than she should.

I don't understand why people get snippy about having to show ID when you write a check. The store is doing it for your and their protection. Your protection because it sort of prevents someone else from cashing your checks. Their protection because they may be on the hook for fraudulent checks.
This is primarily due to the ZOMG ID Thieves are EVERYWHERE image that the media plays up so much, so you need their ID to see if it's really them, but they don't want to be a victim so they go into ZOMG PANIC mode.

I don't understand the "under a certain number" rule either.
IIRC before you could start the number at whatever you wanted certain numbers meant checks for a new account (I remember this back in 99 or so... all my "starter" checks were numbered 1000 and under, WAS a way for them to cover their asses since you haven't had enough experience (in their eyes) with that bank or checks in general.

It was a stupid rule before, and now it's a completely useless rule.

All it ever told anyone was that the account was new. Not that the account-holder was new.

And somehow that makes sense? Someone who has had the checking account for a long time is just as capable of writing a rubber check as someone who is new at it.

Back when the Aid of Rite was Brooks, we had a problem with checks under 300 bouncing.

It was pretty consistant. Typically if the check was over 300 the people writing it had money, but those lower number checks were usually written by people who either didn't know how much money they had in the bank or just didn't care. You could tell because in their little books they had written larger sums on previous checks.

Anyway for the longest time the management told us we couldn't take checks below 300 anymore.

Check policies just make things more complicated all around and they do nothing to improve sucky customer situations.

Wasn't saying it was a good rule, just their whole reasoning... but yeah was pretty stupid anyways.

No it still makes no sense, but then again it's usually company policy and when have those ever reflected reality.

Today, a customer came up to the counter wanting cigarettes. She looked young so I asked for ID. She threw a fit, said she was in there all the time and was never asked for ID, and she was friends with one of my coworkers. I offered to get a manager for her and she accepted.

The assistant store director came up and ended up telling the customer that I was following policy and doing my job. The customer mentioned that I wasn't doing my job if I ask for ID sometimes. I ask for ID if the customer looks under 30 to me which she did. Her boyfriend got her ID from the car and she was of age so she got the cigarettes.

Another customer who was returning stuff mentioned to me that the cigarette customer was rude. This customer knew that I was asking for ID because it was the law.

So...did she just effectively throw her "CW friend" under the bus by admitting that the CW *never* asks for ID...? It *is* the law, friends or not...

And yeah I know it may not really be needed if the CW knows for a fact that she's of age

That policy never made sense to me. When ordering cheques/checks you can specify the start number, I set mine at 006 because the trust company gave me 5 samples to use, but could have set it at 300 if I wanted.
i always start checks at 1001. and i never let bank/checker printer put month/year when i opened account on the check. easiest way to avoid hassles over account being (too) new.

then again, i use checks so rarely now. i can't remember last time i paid for an in-person purchase with a check.

Whenever I changed checking accounts I started the new check numbers where the old ones left off. That way I never had duplicate check numbers in my records.
