Buglady has the right idea. I'd also look at this yahoo and point out "Hmm, aren't YOU here on Easter as well?"

And Peppergirl, thanks for pointing out that Easter is not a federally recognized holiday and that the retail world doesn't pay extra Not that I'm going to have a fit about it or anything. But if you're going to start handing out extra wages...

RSC: But what about Easter? They didn't give you Easter Sunday off??
Me: A few people booked it off, but I'm not really a religious person, so I didn't mind working it.
to me that just says... you did something nice for your co-workers. i just hope they pay you back and let you have a Sunday off in turn.

I have Easter off, but then, I have Sundays off. It has nothing to do with religion...I just like having Sundays off. Especially during the NFL season.

Now, if I had dealt with that guy, it might (MIGHT, not guaranteeing anything) have gone something like this:

        RSC: YOU'RE NOT A CHRISTIAN????
        JESTER: Umm...no, I'm not.
        RSC: That's just...that's just...
JESTER: I'm Jewish. Incidentally, so was Jesus and all the Apostles.
        RSC: [silence]

Now, I am not a practicing Jew, but then, a guy like this doesn't need to know this, does he?
I've only worked one job in my life where I had Sundays off, but I really liked it. If there's one day of the week I'd rather not work it's sunday. I can work any saturday you like but I prefer my sundays off. Hopefully at some point I get in a position to have them off again.

My Dad's a bartender, and he's working today too. And he's Jewish. Send the SC on over and my Dad'll talk about Passover and BLOW HIS MIND.
A bit of a tangent...a while back I went in to work at the Waterfront Bar. DB, an older bartender, looked at me and asked me what I was doing there.

          JESTER: "What do you mean?"
DB: "Isn't today a holiday for you?"
JESTER: "What holiday would that be?"
          DB: "Passover."
JESTER: "Really? I didn't even realize that. By the way, thanks for reminding me, I need to get some breakfast."
          DB: "What are you getting?"
          JESTER: "Two sides of bacon."
          DB:

I did say I was not a practicing Jew, right?

Generally speaking, whenever I start at a new job, I tell them I prefer Sundays off. Generally speaking, at first they are rather skeptical, and tell me they'll see what they can do. Generally speaking, the first few months I will work some Sundays. And generally speaking, once they see how I bust my ass while working, they end up giving me Sundays off.

That's the only part I hate about starting a new job....working Sundays.

I gotta say, when I did work Sundays for a while, I was head cashier at Store2, and I worked the opening shift (7-3:30). The first two hours of the shift we weren't open yet, and I was in the cash office doing the deposit and getting the drawers ready; then the first few hours after we opened were generally pretty slow (figure people go to church, or breakfast, or sleep in) and I was actually able to get work done in my section on the sales floor. It was pretty nice. The few times I closed on a Sunday was nice, too, since they closed two hours earlier than the rest of the week.

Jester - I did the same thing. I always told them I would prefer to work Saturdays and it usually wasn't a problem. But I didn't really have a reason for it; I just wanted to have one day a week where I could be relatively sure I wasn't working and I picked Sunday. Perhaps because if I worked Saturday nights we were more likely to go for drinks...

I like C's posts BETTER than GK's but that's just because I'm a sucker for restaurant stories.. Nothing against GK! As a matter of fact, I have the latest episode of GK queued up and ready to read next!

I've never worked on Easter, but i did get a lot of attitude last summer for working on Sundays.

                    SC= You're working on a Sunday?
Me= Yeah. I get Mondays and Tuesdays off though.
SC-= Why not have a normal weekend?
Me= Why are you here today?
SC= Well the weekend is the best time to take the kids to the museum. I have the day off, and it's educational. It's so great on a Sunday to take a long drive, head over to the museum, and....Oh, it's the customers fault isn't it?
Me= Oh I would never say that.

I later found out that the guy put in a complaint to my boss because she hired a non-Christian!
Whoah, there are laws about religious discrimination (esp in the workplace). It's some of the same laws that allows him to practice his religion freely in this country. Sheesh.

Hmm.. strange he'd make you the object of his ire and complained to management for your lack of religion specifically. In fact, if you follow his anger to its logical end..

                          - You are woking on Easter.. meaning the bar is open on Easter.. meaning, obviously the owner is not that religious that he/she feels the bar should be closed. Yet they are complaining about you? Hmmm..

                          - Obviously you won't be working on Easter alone. So there are other heathen workers employed at your bar to complain about.

                          - Since the bar will be open, obviously there are many other heathens in the niehgborhood, as any logical person would realize it would lose money to have a bar open all day for no customers.

And finally.. we're really going to concern ourselves with finding the most devout and holy among us... in a bar, working or otherwise? Not that any bar is necessarily a den of ill-repute and unholiness (although I've frequented and had gigs in quite a few that fit that description).

It seems our holier than thou friend has a lot more complaining to do then just about your lack of religion.

Just wondering, How long do you have to practice until you get it right. After practicing the piano for a year I still couldn't do two staves at once so I gave up.

See it's people like this that make me regret my Christianity. Though I'm pretty sure most people would call me a heretic, so I'm cool with the crazies I'm "not really a Christian."

Anyway, a lot of people give me dad attitude for working on Holidays and Sundays. But that's just how the place he works does things. They would force him to retire if he didn't go with the flow. (Or fire him) He's still a Church Elder and a really great Father.

Also, if you're in the bar on Easter don't look down on the barkeep. At least they are doing something productive.
