Believe me, managers always blame the employees!
Which is why I'm looking into starting my own business.
If I truly f'ck up, then it will be MY fault. For true.

We had an incident a couple months back where a guy would come in to buy a pack of Newports. He'd swipe the card and walk out with the cigarettes before the register came back with, "invalid pin" or some such reply.

To this day I will not let the cigarettes or alcohol out of my hand until the payment has been made.

Actually, technically you did quit. Walking out on the job without approval of a manager can be considered job abandonment, and they can either take it as you quit or they can terminate you. I'd call and talk to the manager about the status of your job.

Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success.

              Did.

              I called yesterday.

I went in today. 5 day suspension. Which gives me a week to get some more of my personal business off the ground without having to work 2nd shift.

So it's a good thing really.

OMG!! The company I work for would not think for one moment to throw me under the bus for some hog who came into the store with an attitude, itching for confrontation.

I told the manager that I didn't mean to embarrass her but I was covering my tookus and the store's tookus. He sat back and said, 'I'm just telling you what she told me.' And I said, 'I am telling you what happened.'
Yeah, I'm with draftermatt here. I don't really see how this is taking the SC's side, unless he said something else that got left out. Maybe I had to be there.

I've had the same thing told to me, once years ago when some guy complained I promised to help him and then abandoned him (the idiot wandered away from the photo counter and I couldn't find him so I assumed he didn't want my help anymore.)

He bitched to management and the MOD just told me "this guy complained about you, what happened?" and I explained my side of the story, and they left it at that. No disciplinary action for me.

I don't know if this is official policy at my store, but it is MY policy when ringing or doing carry-outs. I will not allow the merchandise to leave the building unless and until the payment goes through and I see a receipt printing up.
Mine too. I've had people get all antsy and try to get me to deliver their merchandise before payment has been completed. Umm, no. Credit cards can be declined, debit cards can be declined, and checks can prompt for an approval which may or may not be given. I'm not going to give an LP person jonesing for an apprehension a reason to nab me for accessory to theft.

I also don't see this statement as necessarily taking the SC's side, although we should all keep in mind that only Office Slug was there, and the manager's tone would count for a lot.

But the manager is most definitely spineless. Not for refusing to stand up to the customer, but for refusing to own his opinion. "I'm just telling you what she told me" is a cop-out. He believes the customer, or he believes his employee. He needed to pick one belief, and own it. Instead, he decided to sit on the fence like a butt-covering coward.

I expect far more conviction in my managers.

Exactly. When dealing with managers, I subscribe to the following belief:

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I don't expect to be handled with kid-gloves. I'll admit when I'm wrong and let the chips fall where they may. But if I'm right, dammit, BACK ME UP!

I work for a library, where technically you get stuff for free, but you have to check it out on your card.

One day an old lady was walking out the door with some books, with out checking them out.

The manager didn't take the books away, or call the cops.

No, she got the old lady a library card.

What moron does not know you check out books from a library?!! I bet the old woman was hoping no one would notice she was taking out the books.

Well I guess if she really didn't know then education was better than anything else at the time. Just as long as she is aware that she is responsible for those books and their safe return

But I do find it strange for her not to know that she needed to check them out.

I'm one of those mean clerks who won't let merchandise go outside of the store unless I know it has been paid. I generally keep all merchandise to my side of the counter until the transaction is done unless there is a lot of stuff. Once it's paid, then I'll slide everything back to the customer. If it's not paid, and the customer decides not to buy it after all, I immediately slide everything behind the counter so they can't try a grab-and-run.

                              I know how you felt!

The other day i had a guy walk right past my register with an expensive kid's pool saying "i'll be right back to pay i just don't want to make two trips!"
                              Um, what?

What a dumbass. How is it two trips? You grab the pool, you pay for it, you leave. The way he wanted to do it is two trips. Logic fail, moron.

(Yes, I know he was probably a scammer, just not a very bright one! )

Try being on the other side of that mess.

I was out shopping with friends, and being helpful they took the groceries to the car. Boy was I embarrassed to have to go out for everything when the check didn't go through.
