The convenience store where I work is open 24-7. Usually, when the phone rings, I will only answer it if I'm working alone, or if the other clerk is busy. I usually answer it in a neutral tone, "Store name...," and wait for the caller to get to the point of their call. Most of the calls are either for the manager, or some pointless inquiry that's wasting my time like lottery information. Either way, it's not for me, so I don't care about talking to the caller. There it's just a job, and so I don't care.
At the museum, I'm nicer to the callers because I like the job better. Most of the calls are just transfers to the office staff, but some are inquiries for directions, hours, etc. Even there, I will let anyone else answer the phone first if someone else is working the desk. Most of the time, I'd rather be out talking to patrons about their questions or working on a project. After hours, voice mail gets it, and the office staff will get back to the caller later.
I just don't like talking on the phone unless I have a specific reason. There are only a handful of people in the world that I care about talking to on the phone.
