Well, I'm late to this party, but it is my favorite pet-peeve topic.
I am the original fussy-basket-bag lady where I live.
*I* hate it when I put all my bags and receptacles on the belt or counter and say "I'm going to use these please, and I would like to bag everything myself".
The cashier goes, "ARE YOU SURE?"
I say "Yes, I'm sure".
And then the cashier starts ringing me up and IMMEDIATELY starts shoving things in STORE PLASTIC BAGS. Then, he or she will get all huffy when I remind them that I JUST SAID I WOULD LIKE TO USE MY OWN CARRIERS.
OOOF.
There are all sorts of variations on this scenario; I still end up with bags and bags of plastic bags and either stuff them in the recycling barrels or give them to the library.
CAVEAT: Did you's know that you can do the recycling-stuff-a-bag thing with other plastic wrapping? Most are made from Plastic #2 or #4 and as long as they haven't been printed up with food labels and logos, and are "clean" (no food residue or other junk), they can be recycled too. These materials are not used to make more bags; they are combined with sawdust and used to make a durable plastic-wood composite lumber.
