This occurred a while ago but to keep it short, I leave my dept and go check a few store displays. I get distracted and return about 10 min later. A few minutes alter SC appears at the register holding a coffee.
SC: I can I pay for this coffee here?
Me: sure *ring up coffee* that will be $1.59
SC: I left money here earlier.
Me: what do you mean?
SC: well I came by and no one was here but I wanted a coffee so I left a $20 so i wouldn't get in trouble for stealing and i would come back to pay later.
I want to pay.
Me: Sir, well no money was her when i came back. Let me call a manager.
I call the MOD and explain the situation. They call LP. Sure enough the SC left a bill by the register and walked off some old guy took it and apparently use it to pay for his groceries as he imminently went to the front end registers. The MOD comes down.
MOD: sir, our Security has determined that you did indeed leave bill on the counter in plain view and walked off. Someone took it and as elf the building.
SC: NOOOOOOOO! You stole it.
MOD: Sir, I have seen the video and our employees did not steal it.
SC: YES THEY DID!
MOD: Sir, i have gone as far as I can go. If you wish to peruse the matter further you will have to contact the Police yourself.
SC: fine whatever. I pay for the coffee AGAIN!!!
He pays with exact change and stops off. Never heard from this moron again. But sadly this is not the first time this has happened. I have caught SCs just tossing a few bucks on the counter and walking off. Depending on my mood I will either politely offer to ring them up or just give them their money back and politely tell them that they are idiots and that leaving money on the counter does not equal paying for a item.
Somehow they have decided that getting the coffee and drinking it while they shop then paying for their groceries AND coffee up front then leaving is stealing but tossing the money on the counter paying for the groceries and leaving isn't.
