The photo ID cards actually SHOULD be issued by the federal government. The new ones look like this:

the problem is that alot of people wont get the new cards until their old ones are worn to hell. most of the ones i see are brown and double sided.

Well the cards I used to commonly see at work had the "department of indian and northern affairs" logo on them so I guess I assumed they were federal IDs.

At my store (which not on a reserve) we were required to waive PST for natives with those cards, maybe it was a corporate decision.

When I worked in a grocery store, we were required to waive PST if the customer produced his/her status card and this wasn't on a Reserve either. Several stores out by my in-laws have signs up by the cash reminding people that they must show their status cards before making their purchases and they aren't on a reserve either. Now I'm curious!

That's what my card looks like right now. We're supposed to get the new ones soon, but it's actually been delayed because they don't work. There's a magnetic strip on the back that's supposed to give all of your information to border crossing guards and whathot.

Also, in Quebec, stores are required to remove one tax as you purchase your items. People on my reservation have actually boycotted stores that refused to take tax off. My mom actually used to carry around a print out from the Government of Quebec website stating that stores are legally required to take the tax off.

One of the things I really like about this board' culture is that we're willing to give each other genuine advice to avoid trouble, even going to the extent of hunting down required images.

Personally, I'd have posted this in the 'morons in management' thread. Customer was an asshole, but manager was worse, IMHO.

When an SC leaves the store, and the manager shakes his/her head and says, "I don't understand what makes people act like that."

It's because they know that if they make a big enough stink, someone will give them what they want just to make them go away. As long as that keeps working, they'll keep acting like that.

The key is to say it in just such a way that it sounds like you're being just general and not referring to them in any way. Good luck with that. I'd be hard-pressed to not give them a pointed look while making such a statement.

I hope I'm not the only one amused by how non-native the sample image appears.

lol, my favorite one was one of the many foreign military affiliates we get (San Antonio is a major military city, btw).

Military personnel, and dependents with proper ID, are tax-exempt ON BASE. At least U.S. personnel on U.S. bases are.

I wish I lived closer to Ft Hood (Killeen) or Ft Sam (San Antonio) so I could do more of my shopping there. I make do with Camp Mabry in Austin for certain items if we're on that side of town anyway.

eta: At least at the commissaries and such like. I don't hit the convenience stores or fast food franchises on base, so I don't know about them.

I don't have a proper military ID yet (just a cadet, lol) so I can't even get on base if I wanted to. I just make do with the tax.

I unfortunately have to deal with tax-exempt orders quite often at the wholesale club. Fortunately, it's rather simple to do. All you need is a valid tax-exempt business account with the store. And it's simple for the cashiers to tell by looking whether or not your membership is tax-exempt qualified. The first three numbers of the membership number are the issuing club's number, the next number that appears denotes what kind of membership you have. If it's a 4, it's a household (or "personal") account, if it's an 8, it's a business account. If it's a 5, it's a tax-exempt business account.

But lately, I've been getting A LOT of people who are buying stuff for the county public schools, but haven't been given the school's tax-exempt membership card. Sometimes they'll tell me at the start, "This is tax-exempt," and I can quickly explain to them, "I understand this is for a school, but I can't ring this up tax-exempt." "But here's the paper saying it is." "But THIS CARD is not a tax-exempt membership card." Usually they'll accept that and we'll ring up their order, and they either just take it as-is back to the school, or they go over to the desk to talk to a manager or something to see about getting the tax waived after the fact.

I did get someone who didn't mention the tax-exempt thing until AFTER I'd already rung up their entire order. Argued with her for five minutes about the tax-exempt part before she understood that I couldn't waive the taxes for her.

tax-free shopping means it gets taken out in other ways...higher school tax, higher wage-tax, etc...i loved living in VT, especially near the NH border, because there's no sales tax in NH and there are lower property taxes, etc in VT...

Then there's the reverse. Texas has no personal income tax, but they've got a god-awful sales tax.

Then there's New Mexico. We don't tax on meds anymore or food....as long as it's not a ready-to-eat item.

Me: ...then why are you trying to pay with a student ID? (You have to at least have a green card to have a student ID you can pay money with.)
