  • Yes I DO need to see ID with checks

Listen and listen well: When you write out a check or travelers check, you need to have a state-issued ID with you and also will need a phone number as well. Don't say your license number to me or tell me it's already on the check, I'll just repeat my request until I see the damned ID. I've had to repeat up to five times for a license or some other state- or government-issued ID because the idiot wouldn't let me see it long enough to write down the number. I can refuse the check without seeing your ID.

While it IS nice that you did my job for me and wrote down the numbers, I still need to see ID. Because I don't know who you are, if the check is actually yours, or if you're a Big Wig at corporate that's doing a quick round to see if us mere peons are doing their job correctly. I like to keep my job, thanks.

I also need your phone number, I don't really give a damn if it's unlisted or not. Make up a number if you have to or, as a customer a while back did, give me your friend's phone number. I don't know how you got a checking account in the first place if you refuse to give out your phone number, and I really don't care if you rave and rant about it, but I still need it. I can also refuse the check without a phone number.

Also make sure that your checks aren't starter checks, we CAN NOT accept them for various reasons. And that you have a valid ID with you, your bank card/credit card/debt card/whatever is NOT a state- or government-issued ID and will NOT be accepted in lieu of a drivers license.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

Ugh. The people who write down or recite their license numbers drive me nuts. I can say a string of numbers, too. 5782026585. There. That's my license number. Oh, you need to actually see it with your own eyes to verify the number? Huh. Weird.

I've used a large variety of government-issued IDs for checks- passports, military IDs, driver's licenses from other countries...

Though I got an OK from my supervisor for that last one, just in case. I thought it looked cool- she was from China.

My store can accept ID's from other states, as it should be since that's the law...but I still get people who get uber-paranoid about showing me their ID. I just want the number, folks. :sigh:

Ours does too, although we need an FES or manager signature on the check if the check, ID, or both check AND ID are out of state.

Get a lot of Canadian ID's during the winter months, managements approves of this since we do get a bunch of Canadian customers.

Huh, pretty much sure we don't take other country's checks, though. We don't even take "flat" (ie. unable to be inprinted) debit/credit cards.

Different states are another matter since we have the Fed. etc...etc...

I don't get why people still use checks.

It's just like a bank card, but larger, more awkward to carry around, less secure, slower, and less convenient, and more likely to be in error.

These days it's also accepted in far fewer locations.

And, with every bank I've ever dealt with, more expensive to use.

Because in the USA, it's just not set up the way it is here with respect to using your bank card to pay pretty much anywhere.

(For anyone not in the know, in Canada, all the banks are on a network called Interac - which enables you to pay directly from your bank account at retailers. Think Visa cheque card, but it's the same card you'd use for your regular banking and at an ATM. And damn near every business in Canada takes it. In fact, it's just about as hard to find a business that doesn't accept Interac as it is to find a business that does take cheques! )

I had no idea the States didnt have a similar system, I'm amazed.

Here in Victoria, BC, even the cabs and delivery guys take plastic....
For that matter, so do the high-end escorts and drug dealers.

Yeah Taxi's and Pizza guys and other delivery guys take Interac (and Credit Cards) now, especially since the hand held/cellular PIN machines seem to be becoming more common.

Though up here there is one glaring exception to the Interac network.... Tim Horten's doesn't take Debit cards (but they do take Mastercard). It's probably the only major chain that doesn't take Debit.

                        YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had some harpy screaming at me the other day because her license was expired and I couldn't accept it. I mean I literally couldn't accept it because we have to enter the expiration into the register and it declines it.

And she's practically spitting on me: "This is ridiculous! I've NEVER had anyone have a problem with this BEFORE! It doesn't matter! I didn't even know it was expired! EVERYONE ELSE TAKES IT!!"

                        Blah blah blah.

The sign at my local Timmy's says this is simply a time issue - getting grumpy people their coffees first thing in the morning, FAST, is the game (well, they don't say it like that, more like 'to ensure swift service...'). And the only MC they take is the paypass kind - where you tap it on the spot and go, no receipt, no signing. Keeps the lines moving!

They have the sign up saying it's for speed... But then they brought in the Mastercard system. And it's not JUST PayPass kind. I've used the full card (no PayPass) at a few Tim's in my area. It's hit or miss whether they decide I need to sign it or not too.

In Illinois, if one does not have any accidents or tickets, a driver can just send in a renewal fee and the DMV will send a decal to attach to a license which extends it for another 4 years. Thus I have to check both sides. For other ID's my tax office takes just about any kind of gov't-issued ID including passports, military ID's and even once a lady had her green card.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!
