Were they Amish or Mennenites? Because Mennenites have no problem using modern technology. I don't know much else about Amish culture, sadly.

No, I wasn't being sarcastic. Where I live, we don't cancel school for snow. Ever. If the temperature hits about -30 degrees Celsius, they have recess indoors.

I guess we just figure that since school is held in a heated building, there's really no reason to cancel it.

      Hurricanes are a bit different.
So is snow in many areas where the residents don't own winter tires on their cars and most have all seasons with worn treads, and the city's snow removal system just can't keep up with a serious snowfall. Keeping the schools open is just risking the lifes of their students for no good reason, and would be particularly silly to keep them open while the police are sending messages to the news chanels begging people to stay the hell off the roads unless it is a dire emergency.

We never have make up days though, there is a certain amount of flexibility in the schedualing in most schools that they can catch up on a few missing days easily enough, think of all the days teachers use for extra-ciricular activities, such as decorations for particular holidays and dances, sports days, field trips etc. that can be trimmed, as well as a couple of extra homework assignments tossed in.

I was gonna ask the same thing. They look about the same, (I think) but Mennonites drive cars (and run REALLY AWESOME restaurants). I see them in the rest stops when I'm up in the PA area, and they're driving cars. Little kids dressed like they're off the set of Little House On The Prairie and playing frisbee. I love that.

Props to any kid these days with both the chutzpah and the savy to wear a zoot suit. I bet he looked cool as hell.

I once saw an Amish or Mennonite woman and child at the airport. They were both dressed like the people on 'Little House', and the woman had some kind of head covering.

Did anyone else think of the song 'Zoot Suit Riot' when they read about the graduation? Still, kudos to that kid for being bold in fashion, but still remaining tasteful.

Those kids were lucky. My mom still made me go to school, even though they were make up days and we techincally had nothing to do.

Although, my teachers did come up with some cool stuff. My 7th and 8th grade math teacher brought in her karoke machine and let us do that. The other teachers let us talk, watch movies, or bring board games from home. I would play Mancula always!

The only time I actually liked Snow days was my senior year because no matter how many we had, I didn't have to make it up

In Idaho, school was only closed if the diesel fuel in the busses froze. Happened maybe twice in the 5 years we lived there. Craziness!

I would love to see my hubby in a zoot suit - I think they are sexy.

Well if you're dealing with a blizzard/lots of snow/tons of ice, you don't have school. Kindof evil to send kidlets out when you can't see the end of the drive past the door.
We do deal with that... and windchill factors that would cause exposed skin to freeze in under a minute. I've yet to see school cancelled.

My school system musta kinda sucked in that regard -- if we didn't need to USE the "make-up days", they had us come in to school anyway. Argh.

In Baltimore, we cancel school if there's a chance of flurries. Seriously, school has been canceled here because of a possibility of snow. No actual snow, just a chance. And six inches is an absolute blizzard.

LOL that's insane (just my opinion, worth two cents)! Of course I'm gonna qualify again with the fact I came from a small town, population spread out in the country and flat land. White outs are pretty common when you're located in middle of nowhere prairie land LOL. Heh or we were just spoiled, which I can see too.

Up here in the frigid north, snow days are unheard of. We had to cancel school.. once? in 20+ years because of a blizzard, and that was because it was so bad, there were a few people who died in their cars while stranded.

I can remember walking to school in blizzards, or when it was so cold your eyelashes would stick closed as your tears froze.

I can only remember one day in the public school time when it was canceled for snow- and that's when there was thunder and lightning in the blizzard.

Later on, in high school, there were a few days when the buses didn't run, but I was in walking distance, so I schlepped in. For the most part, those days, they just played Monty Python movies in the auditorium. And no make up days either.

My "city" (it wasn't really large enough to be a city, they just changed the definition of "city-sized" to make it fit) had a large contingent of kids out in the country. Buses were cancelled often, and parents might keep kids home, but school was only cancelled at -40 and blizzard conditions. Otherwise, it went on, regardless of how many kids were actually there. Everyone else was just supposed to make it up, unless the teacher was nice and just let the kids who showed goof off. I think in my 12 years, school was actually cancelled once. Maybe twice.
