I am once again happily employed at my local Girl Scout Camp. THis past weekend we had the annual Mother/Daughter weekend. Father Daughter is usually pretty fun- all you worry about is teh occasional bratty child (and she was a doozie) or Dad who whines that "that's not how teh Boy Souts do it"

MOther daughter can be.... yeah, I bet you can get the picture. Last year when I was recouperating from knee surgery it rained, so they *really* got the rough edge.

THis year was utterly different. THis year the temp was in the upper 90s every stinking day- odd for this part of the country this month. It started with calls Thursday "Do you have a/c?" and some cancellations.

Then The Day. People were asking if we had a/c and electricity in teh tents/cabins (in this case the cabin is 4 walls w/screened window and a screen door).

Are you kidding me? THis is a Girl Scout Camp. YOu should get down on your knees and thank God you are getting flush toilets and screens At All- if you were the camp where I grew up or where I worked in Kansas City, you wouldn't even get walls and screens! The camp in PA is between KC and my current place.

But the kicker- and I witnessed this one myself "But the brochure said there would be air conditioning!"

BZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!! WRONG! the word Climate Controlled comes up once and only once FOR A DIFFERENT CAMP (that we rent from church camp, the lease is up this year, and frankly the facilities are awful).

The weather did us a huge favor, though. All teh Awful MOthers who gripe about everything bailed! our group of 64 was down to 32 by lunch, and No Bitching (also I had time at teh archery range to plunk out 100 arrows).

    Fun moms! Yea us!

So while none of us like living outdoors in 100 degree heat, if it gets us a happy Mother/Daughter, we'll take it!

I hate mothers like that. Even my own mum didn't seem to mind when we went camping with other family members one year for a weekend (it was a memorial thing at my late cousin's favourite spot). We borrowed my uncle's caravan, which only had storage space, a roof over our heads and beds. We had no cellphone reception (or barely) and no running loos. We actually wound up having three toilets...one was a Number One for the girls (your basic portaloo), one was a Number One for the boys (a nice open space to write your name with a tarp around it for privacy) and a number Two for everybody (a long drop=basically, a deep hole, with a toilet seat over the top).

I remember doing Girl Guides when I was little, and our camp...we were fortunate enough to have a decent dorm.

Although I do think thats a silly question. I mean you sent your daughter to GS camp to "rough it." (Product of about 8 years at GS camps). When I worked at boy scout camp the staff TENTS had electricity. And yes... we pimped those out. One year I had a small tv and other year I had a hanging light (like those pretty ones for your house).

What? You have flush toilets and running water (I'm guessing here) and they complain? What?

When I camp I'm expecting water from somewhere and thats it.

You aren't talking about the GS camp over by Albany are you? That's where my daughter's troop goes, I didn't know they had one in KC, that might have been closer.

the council formerly known as Mid-Continent has a mess of camps. One is between Lee's Summit and Independence. One is near Dearborne and the other is s. of Sedalia. Also daisy Lowe, but that one is Special Needs and I never got out there.

My Mom just got back (late last Friday) from taking her Girl Scout troop on a week-long camping trip at a GS camp near the NC/VA state line. It was super hot, but the girls had a lot of fun. Mom said she had to keep on the girls to get them to drink enough water. My little cousin and her friends were going around asking the other girls what color their pee was- 'cause if it is dark, you aren't getting enough water. They went through at least eight of the sixteen ounce bottles of water a day. Mom said there were a few girls in another unit that went home because they couldn't take it.

Well the local YMCA camp has A/C and Heat in the new bath house they built a few years ago. The 2 large sleeping cabins only have elec and bathrooms. One has a wood stove and fireplace with ceiling fans in a huge room and a smaller room, the other is divided into small rooms that sleep 4-6. All the other "general" cabins have elec/lights and are just a roof with a 3ft wall.

They have a few mini cabins that have their own bathroom. One of them has heat and A/C.

A few years ago I was one of the organizers with a church group that used it for a weekend retreat type event. We had sign up sheets with pictures of the cabins inside and out with all the "features" that we were using for sleeping. You could sign up for the cabin/room you wanted. People were told that their is almost no A/C so it will be warm, bring a fan. A few people didn't. One family actually stole another persons fan.
