  • Shore thing Episode 8: holidays...

Working on the shroe there are two.... sure... things. one, you get lots of tourists, and two, you get LOTS of tourists on holidays. working only in the summer meant I was assured atleast 3 holidays of true horror; memorial day, 4th of july, and labor day. but 4th of July is the worst of them all. I am used to busy crowds and being rushed from table to table to keep them clean, but the 4th of july gives me the extra challenge of dodging and weeving through thick crowds. like zebras on the savanna, their red, white and blue clothing blends them into a wall of unknowable shape.

One 4th of july something terrible happened... the other busser didn't show up. this was the 3rd time he was caught skipping work, so he was called up, told not to come back, and I was left... on a saturday... alone. the prospect of tons of money coming my way (the most I ever made in a single day) was over shadowed by the sheer terror I knew was about to befall me. I would have to keep an eye on two halves of the resturaunt, none of which had easy eye shot to the other, so I would be sprinting from one side to the next clearing tables and emptying bus buckets. and of course... a holiday wouldn't be a holiday without Sucky customers.

why won't you get our drinks!
as a busser I don't get the training and permit to order and handle alcohol. mostly because I didn't know how to varify ID's until 2 years later, so I am unable to get drinks for anyone, and am far to busy to do it anyway. so I am clearing off a table, an especially messy one, as fast as I can when I am poked (again, doesn't bother me because we are loud).

    Me: can I help you?
SC: yea, we want more drinks please, and can we get blah blah blah blah type of beer blah blah.
Me: I'm sorry but I can't, I'll try to flag down your server in a second.
I go back to cleaning... another poke.
SC: why won't you get our drinks!?
Me: because I am not certified to do so and I'm a busser, not a server. sorry.
at this point I am very dirty, tired, and in no mood to deal with customers. I turn back to clean.... *poke poke*
Me: ok, I'm really busy, you have to stop doing that
SC: excuse me!? we want our drinks and you're not helping us!
Me: I said I would in a moment! I am the only busser on, and its packed, I'll get your server when this table is clear, people are waiting for it.

They blab on as I clean up. complaining about me but I ignore them because I just don't care. I found their server (who was swamped) and she took care of it. they probably stiffed her... because with drunks you either get a ridiculously huge tip, or none at all.

    resturaunts can be bleechers right?

you know what's great about sand? it's soft. you can mold it any way you want and lay down in comfort. we have fireworks every thursday, but it was 4th of july, so these were "special" fireworks. the back half of the resturaunt has an open view to the beach and the northern half of the boardwalk... the half they fire the fireworks from. so... we get self seaters... the worst kind.

I just finished clearing a table when 6 people come over and start taking all of the chairs and arranging them towards the big open window.

    Me: meee
SC1-2-3: 3 of the 6 jerks who think the resturaunt is their living room.

Me: excuse me! but were you seated?
SC1: no we just want to watch the fireworks, can we use these chairs (I like how they ask AFTER they moved them and know full well they don't consider that a question)
ME: I'm sorry but no, we need those chairs for customers and there is a wait.
SC2: get some other chairs, they'll be fine. (as he moves tables now!)
Me: no... those are our only chairs, we need them, please give them back.
SC1: it will only be for the show, they can wait
Me: the fireworks aren't due for another 20 minutes and its an especially long show tonight... so no... they can't. give me the chairs back now.
SC3: excuse me but you're not being very nice!
SC1: not at all! stop being an asshole.
Me: alright! that's it! give me the chairs now or I'm getting the manager!

they ignore me... good... I wanted some fun tonight. so I get the manager (MA) and she is none too happy. so she gets the 2 families who were due to get the tables and bring them over as leverage to get them to move.

MA: we need those chairs, these people have been waiting to sit.
SC1: we already told him we are fine. get other chairs.
MA: you must be confused, because I wasn't asking, I was telling. give me those chairs or we'll get him (points to cop who hangs by our door) to get them back from you.
    CS3: this is unacceptable!
MA: I know, you are. now get up and get out. you have a whole beach to sit on, I suggest using it.

They mumble and grumble their way out, making a mess with the chairs on purpose as they go (seems alot of people we toss out do that) and go to the beach. my manager walks up to me and says...

MA: next forth, just get the cops if they don't move after 3 requests.
Me: you give me this power?
MA: only on the forth. *she then sighed, showing how tired she really was, and went back to work with the hostesses.*

I never got to use this power... seems after this event everyone else would get up after two requests... wusses.

the rest of the day was normal SC fair. most of which I rarely had to deal with or care for. the crowds is what kills me, but its unavoidable. but because I was the only busser on, it was the most tiring day I ever had... but I walked home with over 320 bucks.... one of them was even a 20! (friggen servers and their ones...) which went right into my college expense fund... which was most likely wasted on all the snack foods my parents wouldn't get me, and I then ate for dinner my freshman year. coco puffs at 8pm, college was wacky.

I love your stories. You had some doozy customers while at this job but they are very entertaining. I can only imagine how horrible July 4th is for pretty much anyone who has to work. It always amazed me how busy our call center would get on July 4th. We were open every holiday except Christmas Day, and almost every other holiday was usually really dead in the call center, so people would get to go home early, etc. Not July 4th! We'd have HUGE call volumes on that day, every year. I guess it's a "get out and celebrate and spend money" kind of holiday, as opposed to say Thanksgiving which is more of a "stay in and spend time with family" kind of holiday. At least you got a good tip for all your work!

Your restaurant sounds really awesome except for the SC's. Hope I stumble across it someday!

I'm not sure it still is awesome. I haven't been there in over 3 years, the manager I speak of quit the year I did (to start her own resturaunt with her husband). the reason I quit was because a server was then promoted to her job, she had a boyfriend who was a busser like me, but has only been working there one year, as oppose to my 3. he was slower, not as good at cleaning, and would let bus buckets fill to the brim. she always hated that I got more hours and the better days. so the moment I saw the new schedule (now to 3 days in the week instead of 5, and all of them morning shift) I quit on the spot. I knew what was going to happen to the poor place, and I didn't want to be a part of it. I stayed in touch with one server for a bit after that and she said the place fell apart quickly, and they hated the the girls BF who "replaced" me. knowing how quickly the owners cut people if they ruin business, I doubt she stayed as a manager for long.

Your story rang true with me about the idiots blocking business. I spent the 4th with my sisters & niece in another state. We went to a local shopping plaza to camp out, and sat down on the rocks near the fence. The lot was packed and people were parking crazy. Once the fireworks started, common sense no longer reigned. Behind us was a Taco Inn, who's drive-thru curved behind the building, just a short distance from where we sat. A bunch of EW idiots (as in, 10-20 EW idiots) put down lawn chairs in the middle of the drive-thru. That's right, they were completely blocking business and were in the way of traffic. Another ten idiots sat on the curb, legs dangling into the roadway. Someone drives into the drive-thru, stops, and waits. And waits. And waits, until these idiots fiiinnnnaaaallllyyy move. The dangling idiots didn't move until the 2000 pound automobile was inches from their limbs. How stupid do you gotta be?!?
