  • Coupons Don't Work That Way + Phantom Handout Man?

So I come into work yesterday, and am waiting for an MOD to come to the cash office so I can get a till. The cash office is near the express register, where I see one of my newer coworkers trying to explain something to a woman. There was a big line forming, as well. Wanting to help her out so she can help the other customers, I head over to see what the problem was.

The customer had used a $4 coupon on her order, and paid in cash. The customer was demanding that $4 back in cash. CW was trying to explain to the woman that wasn't how it worked, but part of the problem was that English isn't CW's first language, and I got the impression it wasn't the customer's either.

So I get the story from CW, look at the receipt, and do the math. SC isn't owed any additional cash back, despite her claims. I explain to her that the coupons are counted as a form of payment, and can't be traded across for cash, like it seemed she was insisting we do. SC seemed to accept my explanation and left.

Shortly thereafter, I'm informed I'm covering FDLP for the night, so I head to the door to do that. Not too long after that, a customer who'd been in the express line and seen the whole thing came up to me and said, "I'm so angry with that woman with the coupon. The girl (CW) explained it to her. You explained it to her. Now she's over at the desk asking for her money." I sighed, and shrugged helplessly. "I did all I could do. Out of my hands now." The other customer agreed, thanked me for my help anyway, and left.

EC, who was working at the desk that day, comes up to the food court for her break, and confirms the SC came up, and then confirms that TC, the other desk worker, gave her the $4 anyway.

Later in the evening, I was told by a customer that there was an Indian man in the store, walking up to people, flashing them a card saying he was deaf and asking for money. I asked the customer if they'd told the desk, and they said, "No, they were busy and I'm in a hurry." So they left before I could get a better description than "Indian man," since we get a lot of people of that ethnicity in the store.

Well, JA, the MOD, went out on the floor to try to find this guy, and of course couldn't find him. LC, the FLS, even told him, "JA, he's not gonna flash his card if you're there, you're wearing a [store] badge!" We never did hear anything further about Phantom Handout Man, nor did I see anyone leaving the store that seemed suspicious. I suppose it's possible that PHM had already left the store when the customer told me about him. Then again, I tend not to take anything anyone says at face value, either, because I'm a suspicious bastard like that.

Depending on where she got it, don't coupons often have something printed on them that say "Cash value 1/20 of one cent" or something of this nature? Manufacturers coupons do - maybe this was a store coupon or some such.

The flashing the card thing is for real, not that it is a legit operation, but that it is real in that it does happen. We've lived in several areas of Ky and have been "hit" by this type of operation in multiple areas-walmart, kmart, malls, walking down the street, etc. I refrain from donating since I can't verify the legitimacy, however, it's more likely because I don't carry much cash.

I've seen these ones too - every time I do I want someone to set off a big air horn a few feet behind them. If they jump....

This is where knowing sign language myself comes in handy! LOL! Start a conversation with them - if they can reply, then I might help them out just for the sheer fact that, even if they are scamming, they know their stuff. Many times, it's been a jumble of nonsense in 'reply'

You know, I kept reading this hoping someone would have stood their ground, but I also knew it would end like this. Unfortunately, I have seen this go on where a customer is told over and over and over and over again, and then finally someone caves just to get rid of this problem. Now, she'll go tell everyone what she did, how she did it, and those people will pull this same stunt.

We have a deaf man who comes to our mall with a clipboard and goes through every store asking for donations for a basketball team for deaf kids or something along the lines of deaf athletes. Since we have a No Soliciting policy at our mall, I usually just ignore him, but sometimes he gets really creepy and gets right up on me, like he wants to dry hump my leg. We've had to toss him out many a time.

Of course, I'm of the personal opinion that no one should be given money for free. If you want your deaf basketball team to earn money, do a car wash or a garage sale and plan it so that there are people capable of communicating between potential buyers and those selling. Not too much to ask for.
