So this guy comes in for a room. He wants to know our rate, and I ask him my standard questions. He asks if we have a "Trucker rate" and I, in turn, ask him if he has a CDL (which I normally need for this rate). He replies that he just drives an escort vehicle, which does not require a CDL, and does not have one.
Well, we are rather slow tonight, and my manager is pretty adamant about selling rooms, so I tell him "OK, I'll just give you the CDL rate, no problem."
Then I tell him the rate: $58.00. And he starts in about how ridiculously high that rate is. I tell him that the only hotel that is any cheaper is <competitor hotel> 8 miles away. So he goes on and on:
"I'll need a receipt, and maybe they'll reimburse me." and "I've stayed in nicer hotels for half this much" and so on.
Anyway, I ask for a DL and form of payment, and he hands me the required documents. I note the payment is a Debit card, and show him the Debit Card Policy, because this is a standard thing we do. He tells me to run it as a credit card. I tell him, "it's not how we run it, it's WHERE the money is coming from."
See, it's become a standard proctice in hotels to over authorize Credit Cards (and by extension Debit Cards). While it varies from place to place nearly ALL hotels put in an authorization for Rate, Tax, and "incidentals". However, with a Debit card, this all comes out of the BANK, and it may take a while (10 bus. days) to be put back in.
THIS guy is under the assumption (and not listening to my explanation) that we run it as a Debit Card (we run all cards as Credit) thus putting an additoinal charge on his account. I finally get him to listen long enough to comprehend what I'm telling him. Then he says "If we were in <his home state> I would be in my room by now."
Now, I finally get his paper work all done, Reg. Card signed, key card made, and he asks for an upstairs room, so I accomodate. When I put him upstairs, it happens to be a smoking room, and I ask him if he would like a smoking room, or a different one.
He responds "It better be smoking, or I would have just smoked up a non-smoking room and pissed you off."
I replied (Brain to Mouth filter malfunction) and you would have gotten charged for the cleaning.
He responds "Oh, no I wouldn't. You'd have put me in the wrong room."
OK, I'll admit it was kinda hectic for a bit, and he may have said he wanted smoking and I missed it, but rather that note the SIGN ON THE DOOR, and ask for another room, he would purposely put a room out for a day or 2 for cleaning, just to be an @$$, and still think we won't charge him for it. Heh, heh. We can and will. we've done it before, and my manager, while noting the mistake, WOULD bring that up.
He came down a few minutes later, because when I moved him rooms, I forgot to remake the key.
