i'm betting that the little old lady's fridge was only slightly younger than she is, which explains the milk. if things go badly at home, it's due to their storage, rarely the stores, yet they still cast the blame on stores.
Do we have any evidence that she actually put the milk in the fridge in the first place?

Usually those dates are really "best by" dates. My currently gallon of milk is marked 9/13, but doesn't mean that on 9/14, it's going to be sour all of a sudden. And the way I drink milk, I don't think it's going to make it that long.
It's floating wicker propelled by fire!

I once had a woman tell me she wasn't going to pay the deposit on a case of soda, because she was on her way home, out of state. She figured that because she won't be able to return the cans, she should be exempt.
Personally I think people from other states should be exempt from those charges, if and only if they are from a state that doesn't exchange cans/bottles for money.

That's not up to store clerks though. That's up to state/provincial legislatures.

bottle can deposit takes: these usually on non-necessities, so i really can't be moved by the argument 'but i live in another state' as an exuse for not wanting to pay the deposit. fine, then buy it in YOUR state and the problem is solved, otherwise, you have two choices: pay the deposit and get your goods, or leave without them.

there is that possibilty that grannie did forget to refrigerate said milk (i've done that, but had the sense to dump it rather than keep and use it.

as for the grocery wench's argument about spoiled goods, get a camera, film her 'shopping habits' and when she brings up her case, show her the exact source of her problem and show her the door. stupid doesn't deserve consideration, accomodation or a reward.
        look! it's ghengis khan!
Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

I used to have lots of people come to me to change money. One major difference though - They were usually changing in 1000 to 2000 quarters at a time ($250 - $500). At that time I worked at a small bowling center on a US Navy base and we had some slot machines, all of them throughout the base were thankfully only quarter and some even took bills between $1 and $20.

Of course I would still have people ask to change other coins out, I only did this if my safe was running low or I knew that person.

Twice a week they would come and refill the empty machines. I usually had about $4000 in quarters in my safe that they would buy back. But shortly before my wife and I left there all slots were swapped out and now use a chip card.

(And yes, THANK GOD we had a coin counting machine.)

Ever wonder why a customer buys 20 boxes each of the exact same flavor cereal, Ritz crackers, spaghetti sauce, etc? It's not because they have 30 kids, they own a store.
              What's wrong with that?

I run an independent pharmacy. We haven't got the financial might of the Chain of Verylarge Stores backing us up, so we've gotta save wherever we can. Why should I pay my wholesalers $1.50/gallon for distilled water by the case, when I can get it in ShopRite for 99¢? Likewise, Dollar Tree has lots of what we sell for less than any of my wholesalers, so once in a while, I wander in there and stock up. If anyone at the place wants to know how come I need 15 pregnancy tests and a dozen tubes of yeast infection cream, I have no problem telling them that the stuff's for resale, and they've never given me a hassle about it. One cashier even told me that the next time I should bring my resale certificate, and they'd knock off the sales tax.

(I'm still waiting for someone to say "Why should I pay you $PRICE for this when I can get it for a buck at the Dollar Tree?" My answer of course will be "Where do you think I got it from?")
