Backstory- This happened during the summer while I was working for the Muni, Parks and Rec

It was an otherwise ordinary day and our crew of teenage manual labor workers had been split up and sent to a wide variety of areas. The section of the crew I was in had been sent to a somewhat low-income neighborhood park, with a couple of simple instructions- To clear out bushy areas (to increase visibility), cut down dead trees (Improve the aesthetics of the park), trim all trees to about six feet off the ground (visibility), and when done with all these, send the trees through an industrial wood chipper, then spread the chips around to be used as fertilizer. We could do whatever we felt like with the logs we made from the tree felling.

Only two of us were old enough and trained to use chainsaws (WOOT), and so we were going around together chopping down the trees when this elderly gentleman *cough* walked up to us (we'd stopped the chainsaw to refuel and sharpen the chain) and began to start telling us how we should be doing our jobs. My coworker and I had thought he was a Muni employee, but when we realized he didn't have an ID badge, we asked and found out he was a local resident, complaining about the gigantic mess he made. He didn't talk to ME, actually, rather to my male coworker, who tried to assure him that we WOULD be cleaning this up, and that to a given extent we DID know what we were doing. Bah. Eventually the man left, guys with wood chipper arrived.

We threw the remains of what we'd done into the wood chipper and had it come out as beautiful, wonderful wood chips which we then spread around loosely. We then had our project manager with us at the time when grumpy old man came back, complaining about the "fire hazard" these chips were. Again, wouldn't talk to the girls on our crew, just talked to our project manager. I didn't hear the details, but it got pretty loud. Afterwards our project manager came back and apologized that we had to hear that and told us we'd done a good job and that we did better then he expected. What a mood killer, though!

The voting mention is because we found out a couple days later that the park was one of a handful that the muni had polled residents on and determined to effectively be a priority park to fix which is why it sent us that summer. So, perhaps, if that guy didn't want us there, making the park prettier and safer for all, he should've gone to the park meeting when the muni was there and said so. My guess, though, was simply that he didn't expect his tax dollars to go to a bunch of teenagers (Which, might I add, do about as good of a job as trained professionals for far less money). Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

Old people tend to be grumpy about any form of change, and it's probably a good thing he wasn't at the meeting. In my town, which was without a firehall for over 20 years, local seniors turned out in droves at a meeting about a proposed new firehall which they were all vehemently opposed to, and it was as bad as some of the U.S. town hall meetings on health care. Several seniors were dragged out by security guards. Fortunately the firehall did get built.

Why would you be against getting an extra fire station...o_O;>

The only conceivable objections I could think of would be (a) noise -- which is well worth it for the safety factor, and (b) location, and even then, only if putting it in there would destroy some nice local architecture...in which case the solution would be to have it somewhere more suitable nearby.

Sounds like a case of NIMBY (not in my back yard) syndrome to me.

there are some things that I can understand NIMBY on... a fire station is not one of them... hell, put it in my front yard... I want to be as close to those guys as possible... same thing with the police station, put it as close as you'd like.

money; they'll lose money, on the other hand, they'll be whining and complaining when the emergency services take too long to come and get their asses. it's part of the old person mentality that refuses to accept that the world has changed and they have not.

That's *exactly* what it is. These people (and they're not all old either!) bitch about any sort of tax increase...and then bitch when the township/borough/city/etc. doesn't have enough money to fix the roads, keep crime down, and maintain a good quality of life.

The only reason I could see being against a fire station...would be if they installed one of those damn sirens. My borough has one, and it's annoying as hell. It's not so bad when they blow it at 6pm, but it sucks to hear it going off say, at 2am. It's supposed to let the firemen know that there's a fire, but still. Being the 21st century and all, why don't they just get beepers and/or cellphones?

In my hometown we went through about ten years of trying to get a new elementry school built. The fact that only one of the elementry schools was handicap accessable wasn't a good enough reason to build a new central one, the old people got along just fine in these schools so that doesn't mean children 50 years later need fancy things like uncontaminated drinking water or elevators.

It took a school being closed for not being up to code (due to the water thing I mentioned) and the one the handicap kids had to go to burning down before the millage passed

Yeah, some people just can't handle change and some people just like to complain.

We'd been singing the same Gloria, Sanctus, and Fraction at church for years and recently our choirmaster and priest together decided that that was boring and that the congregation should learn (over time) at least some of the other lovely versions in the BCP. You should have seen some of the old biddies going off after service the first week we switched. You'd have thought some major sin had been committed. Obviously, in their minds, the only sanctioned versions were the ones we'd been singing forever. Oh noes! I have to actually look in the book for the first time in 20 years!

                    and both would be correct

though, on a slight tangent, the story about the fire house kind of reminds me of a proposed Temple down in Pheonix... on the surface you'd think that everyone would want to be close to a fire station, but then you have to think about the sirens and the trucks, etc... likewise, you'd think that everyone would want to be near a Temple until you realize that it has a 6 story tall spire that will be illuminated so brightly that it can be seen from space (there are other reasons, but those are in Fratching territory).

My parents moved into their current place back in 1986, when I was three. The town had a good school system, but back then there was no high school in the town, and high school students got sent to the neighboring town's school. That neighboring school was pretty bad, so a sizable portion of kids got sent to private schools for high school. When they moved, there were plans to try and build a high school, which they were hoping would be completed by the time my brother (who is four years older than me) started high school. Plans got put on hold, and they opted to build a elementary school instead. OK no big deal.

Then every year they proposed building a high school, and every year it got turned down. The major opponents? The town's senior citizens. They didn't want to have to pay for it. The bickering went on for nearly 15 years until finally, a referendum on building the school was held and passed. Why did this one pass? Because someone realized that enough seniors went south for the winter that if they held it as an emergency measure in the middle of the winter, it would be able to pass.

Of course once we got the OK to fund and build a school, we had to decide how and where to build the school. That's another long stupid story, but in the end the final plans passed because they agreed to build a new senior citizen center (which only a few people use).

If you live in a city, you wouldn't want to live right near a fire or a police station. I live in philadelphia and used to live two blocks away from both a fire and police station such that they'd usually go right by my house. I'd have sirens going by my window every 20 minutes. It gets really annoying.

I don't want to go into Fratching, but I'd prefer not to have a large house of worship of any kind near me. There are several Catholic churches in my area and I'm glad they're all over a mile away. They have schools, bingo nights, and multiple masses. The amount of traffic they generate can be crazy, and with all the events there, you never know when you'll run into a backup.

Any kind of meeting hall, secular or religious, that generates that much traffic is definitely NIMBY for me.

The temple in Oakland is all lit up at night. I don't know if it can be seen from space, but I'm sure anyone flying into Oakland Airport can see it.

Schools in general generate a crapload of traffic. How do I know this? Well, there's an elementary school just around the corner from my house. It's not too bad during the day, since I'm at work. Sure, the buses are annoying if you get caught behind one, but there aren't that many.

But, 99% of the parents just piss me off. They'll drop their kids of, then literally lay rubber out of there. Several mornings, I'm halfway out of my driveway...when one of those fools comes roaring around the corner. They slam on the brakes and give *me* the finger for daring to pull out of my driveway! Yeah, never mind that they're usually on the phone and going well over the 25mph speed limit.

Then there are the parent/teacher conferences and other events at that place. All of those events quickly fill up the tiny parking lot there. When that happens, our one-way street becomes an impassable nightmare--idiots parked on both sides of the street, with a narrow "road" between. Does that stop them from driving like Mario Andretti? Of course not!

We had this issue in my town on several occasions, including a new fire house. The old one could barley fit new trucks, had structural issues, and electrical problems. The old folks were against it because they would have to pay less than $100 in taxes for one year. After a few votes other residents came out and voted to approve it. They still complain how they lost the vote, even after they have used the services provided by the FD.
