  • I was a rude and horrible person to her.

At the Pizza place I work at, only 1 person works up at the front of the store during the day. This is usually fine as it doesn't usually get too busy except during the lunch hour. We also have a a rule where if the store phone rings, the cashier has to answer it, even if there are customers in the store. Most customers are fine with this, but if it is really busy, one of the pizza cooks will come out to help relieve the crowd.
Another thing to remember is that we don't accept $50 or $100 notes as it's a small store full of foreigners (I still think that paper notes look like play money) and we aren't sure if it's real or not.

This is where my story begins.

It was a boring afternoon, and I was about 2 hours away from finishing. The store was empty.
A woman, early to mid thirties, walks in. She already has 'Cat-butt Face'. Not a good sign.

CBL: I want a large pizza.
I have a slight thing about people without manners, which considering I've been working in hospitality for over 10 years is slightly strange.
    Me: Sure, let me just...
    The phone rings.
Me: Oh I'm sorry, I'll be just one second.

I take the order on the phone, and despite a 20 second annoyance about the size of the drink the phone customer wanted, I took at the most, 2 minutes to complete the call.
A couple more customers walk in during the call, and CW comes to the front to serve them. CW then turns to CBL and asks if she needs any help. She refuses his help and so CW walks back out to the kitchen.
I finally finish the call and go back to helping CBL.

Me: Okay, so that was the large pizza. Anything else?
    CBL: And a soda.
I notice her pulling out a $50 note from her purse
Me: And a soda. And I just have to inform you that we don't actually accept $50 notes at this store.
CBL: What! Why the hell not!
    Me: It's just store policy.
CBL: Where the hell does it say that!!!
Me: (pointing out the 2 signs we have up around the front till) I'm sorry, but I just can't accept any $50 or $100 notes.
CBL: So what you're telling me is that after making me wait and ignoring me for another customer you're now going to refuse my money??!!!!???
Me: I am very sorry ma'am.
    CBL: This is STUPID!!!!!!

She storms out of the store. I return to my lazing about (what? I'd finished all my busy work for the day).

I thought that'd be that, and I'd just have a little giggle about her for a little while before forgetting all about her. But just a half hour before I finished for the day, I got a phone call.

    Me: doing me opening spiel
CBL: I want to speak to a manager.
Me: (as I always say in this situation) Okay. Can I please ask what this was about?
    CBL: It's personal.

So I hand off the phone to the M (that had only just turned up then). He takes the phone out to the kitchen after a bit, and that's when I correctly work out who was calling.
M finishes the phone call and comes up to me.

M: Sans, did you have any trouble with a lady today?
I relate what had happened to him earlier that day. CW comes out and confirms my story as well.
M: Well CBL had just rang up to complain about you being rude to her.
    Me: Yeah...
M: Just be careful. Some people are just sensitive like that. I just wanted to inform you what she was complaining about.
    Me: Okay...

And that was the extent of my discipline. Oh yeah CBL, you got me good.
My CW's and I spent the rest of the shift poking fun at her (when no customers were in the store, we're not stupid).

The thing is, I am rude to some customers, but this is usually at about 2am on a Sunday morning after I've been working since 7am the previous day. Usually though they're too drunk and/or stoned to realise it. That and that most people can't seem to pick up sarcasm. So I'm definitely not the perfect employee and I'd never claim to be, but Christ, if CBL thinks I was being rude to her, she's gonna get a shock one day when she annoys the wrong person.

How miserable was that lady to take it out on you because she was mildly inconvenienced? Just because she a) is impatient and b) can't read doesn't mean that you were rude to her Probably she has no friends.

Oh, no, you have to remember that any time you do anything that causes the SC to not get what she wants, you have been rude.

And unfortunately, from my experience, managers will believe ANYTHING a customer says, even if ten employees deny it to be true. I once had a customer complain to my manager claiming I reminded her to throw her trash into the trash can. Such a thing never happened. Fortunately he seemed to believe me that it never happened.
