  • I hate alcohol customers...

So the other night I'm doing graves (yay...) and it's about 10 minutes till 2am. A guy comes up wondering if it's too late to but beer. Seeing how it was Sunday morning and the law is no later than 1am I told him yeah it's too late.

FYI: In Texas the law concerning legal hours to purchase alcohol is.

    Mon-Sat: 7am - midnight
    Sun: midnight - 1am
    Sun: noon -midnight

Law applies to bars/grocery stores etc.

    So anyway:

SC: What I thought it was until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays! I just took TABC class I know this stuff I can still purchase beer!
Me: No it's only til 1am on Sunday morning.
SC: No it's 2 am I know this I just took TABC classes I'm training to be a police officer!

Oh wow you took a TABC class! Wow so did every other clerk in a grocery/convience/bar/restaurant in the state! Oh and you just started training to be a police officer. Oh so impressive! Yeah sorry you're still not getting the beer.

Me: Sorry but either way the register won't let me ring it up.
SC: So Kroger is breaking the law.
Me: No we've been told we can't sell alcohol past 1am and the register won't ring alcohol past that time.
SC: So the register is breaking the law?!
    Me:
SC: You know what I just get it at HEB in the morning. Have fun stocking all that!

Wait what? You have like 5 items not including the 6 pack of Bud Light (BTW great taste is alcohol ). Oh yeah it's gonna take like a whole 2 minutes to put back 5 items OH NOES!!!!

OK seriously dude you took a TABC class and weren't paying attention! The only places that sell alcohol until 2am is Bars and restaurants and only if

the establishment is in a city or county legal for late hours, and they have a late hours permit, they can sell alcohol for on-premise consumption until 2am any night of the week.
Everyone else sticks to normal hours of consumption. That's state law! The very thing they were teaching you in said class you attended. Oh and you're gonna go to HEB in the morning? Um they can't sell until noon just like us so either way you're gonna have to wait. Besides I don't wanna see you again anyway, get out of my face. I hope you die in a shoot out or something.

Oh and let's just entertain the thought you are right. Ok why would Kroger not let you buy beer if the law allowed. You'd think that they'd sell it 24/7 to get as much money as they can out of you.

Plus how is it illegal that the register won't let me sell you beer (if I could legal do so). Technically it's illegal to sell beer during certain hours. It's not illegal to refuse to sell beer during a legal hour. In fact we have the right to refuse any sale we want. SO no it's not illegal. Some police officer you'll be.... I for humanity.

    That's it?

Guy comes up tring to buy beer. It's a Friday night and it's just one minute past midnight.

Me: Sorry it's past midnight I can't sell this to you.
SC: Oh come on it's only 1 minute past!
Me: Sorry but the register won't let me. Can't do it.
SC: Oh come on I'll give you 10 dollars!
    Me:

te...te....ten!!! That's it! Just 10 dollars!! Dude seriously no. Leave you pathetic fool. Ten dollars! He's offering me ten dollars to risk getting fired or going to jail or a possibly big fine. Ten dollars! I'm sorry but I've heard better offers given to Khrias, so no, you fail.

Wow... And people up here in Maine get pissed about not being able to buy alcohol until after 9 on SUNDAYS ONLY. Any other day of the week, I think it's either 6 or 7. We don't open until 7, so I'm not sure.

Ok, checking out the laws, it seems we're allowed to sell 4am until 1am the following day. Or at least that's how I'm reading it. Sooo... Wow. Texas is harsh on liquor.
I have CDO. It's kinda like OCD, but the letters are where they should be!

After Tuesday, even the calendar goes W T F...

Send them down here. We have no such restrictions on sales of boozeahol. If anyone tried to implement such laws, they'd probably get lynched >_> Keep in mind that this is an area that once had Blue Laws

Some places - restaurants in particular - still close on Mondays in a sort of homage to that time. That's something I can understand, as (a) everybody knows you eat red beans and rice on Mondays (duh), (b) chances are you'll have leftovers from Sunday Dinner, and (c) we're a big seafood-eatin' town, and Friday is seafood day -- Local legend/ProTip: Don't ever order seafood on Mondays, especially in the AM; it's likely to be the catch of the day from FRIDAY morning. Wait until the evening.

Apparently we still have one of those laws on the books, according to that site -- no car sales allowed on Sundays.

I went into the gas station this morning to get a big ol fountain pepsi (yum!) and I noticed the handles for the 4 or 5 beer cooler doors were chained together and padlocked. Awesome.

And even if state law allowed you to sell until 2AM, it's not "breaking the law" to refuse to sell after 1AM. That's just the company executing their right to refuse service. Of course, in this case, it IS the law, but I'm just saying.....

Yeah Texas is pretty harsh on liquor. But not surprising considering how conservative the state is.
