Not sure what its like in the UK, but here you don't need a credit card. Your ATM card, so long as it is backed by Mastercard or Visa, will work. Some sites, like public utilities, will even allow you to enter your checking account information and set up an automated payment schedule.

I believe most places outside the US have debit cards and credit cards as separate entities.

One of those packages affected was mine, but it did eventually get here. Just thought i'd chime in.
