No offense, but that's a completely different situation. That's a scheduled appointment. Not an ETA. People were right to be annoyed (but not sucky) if they didn't get a call saying "Look, your appointment's being shifted due to X reason."
People had every right to be annoyed and even slightly sucky in these situations but probably 80% of these calls were people so irate they would be screaming as soon as they came on the line. The calls mostly ended with them cursing us out and hanging up on us, not with them actually comprehending that we weren't trying to ruin their life. That's where I see the similarity with Dave's customers--they got mad, they screamed, they were impervious to reason--so I can understand why his company doesn't give out ETAs. Especially since it's picking up bikes; if the bikes were that important, couldn't the SC's just go pick them up themselves?
I am definitely not trying to defend my old company's practices, though.
