There's a town in the Pennines that used to straddle the Yorkshire/Lancashire border - the line went right down the middle of the cricket pitch. Look up the War of the Roses for why this is particularly significant.
Anyway, the county border got moved, but now the town is in Yorkshire yet it has a Lancashire postcode!

Quoth Mamadrae View PostHard part was seriously getting the photo. While most photo shops say they do them, I find out that not everyone can do them PROPERLY.
We went to CVS one day to get stuff and she got her picture taken.
Went back the last day we were there and getting the picture ended up being an hour ordeal.
We then drive to the Post Office where it was another hour. Why? The PO rep said the picture was "too glossy" and took another picture of her right there.
Didn't make for an enjoyable end to the vacation.

And don't forget Saddleworth which is in deepest Lancashire but used to be Yorkshire. They have one of the most active Yorkshire societies in the country and make a big deal over celebrating Yorkshire Day every year.Good customers are as rare as Latinum. Quoth Jester View PostIs the town in Quebec or Vermont? I mean, seriously, it has to be in one of them, right? And while the library may physically be in both, is it listed as one or the other? I can see a library or other building being part of two countries, but a town? I mean, who do the citizens pay their taxes to? Does it vary depending on which side of the country border you are on, even if you are in the same town?Quoth Broomjockey View Postthat's how it works for a town that's on the border between Alberta and Saskatchewan. I imagine it can work just as well for countries as provinces.
What was hilarious for a while was that NM and TX had different drinking ages, with the bar being in one state and the restaurant being in the other. Made for some interesting ordering situations.
And then there was the time they got robbed. They weren't sure if they needed to call the Dona Ana (NM) Co. Sheriff or the El Paso (TX) Co. Sheriff. I think they called both. It's floating wicker propelled by fire!

Quoth Soetkin View PostYay for the european Schengen agreement which eliminated border controls between participating countries.
Last holiday to France, I got lost on the highway trying to find my turn-off and crossed the border about 4 times in 20 minutes driving around in circles.
No checks, no people just old empty booths.

There is border what is along that river, nongreen areas are human population. Try to restrict movement in those areas
As you see towns grow in both sides of river. In fact i dont need even reason to move sweden, i just have to tell local authorities that i just moved there. Also i dont need passport, i just have to be able to prove who i am so any ID will do. Same things if i move inside of finland.
Nice thing in area in picture is that its mostly bilingual, goverment has to provide services in finnish, meänkieli and swedish.

The town is Stanstead, Quebec and Derby Line, Vermont. The library is described at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haskell...nd_Opera_House

When i first saw the title of the thread, i thought it was gonna be about an argument between a Packer fan and a Vikings fan, since the games between the two teams are dubbed "Border Battles".
Anyway, I don't know how it is in other states, but I know that here in Minnesota, you can go to any DMV (and post office, county courthouse, etc) and they will just take your picture for you with your application for no extra $. I never had mine done at walgreens or pro-ex or anything. I just walked in, filled out my application, and used my DL and SSN card for ID. Our DMV's here can pull up and print birth certificate copies, so I just had them do that. They snapped my pic in front of the blue screen they use for DL applicants, and I was on my way."We go through our careers and things happen to us. Those experiences made me what I am."-Thomas Keller

Quoth sprocket79 View PostI find this particularly to be the case in Mexico. I was on vacation in Mexico this past summer and 90% of the stores had US$$ prices - even the people selling woven bracelets on the street! I had actually changed most of my money to pesos so it was a bigger hassle for them to pull out the calculator and convert their dollar prices to pesos!
(Yes, I know that's not quite accurate. Exaggeration for humor.)
No matter how low my opinion of humanity as a whole gets, there are always over-achievers who seek to surpass my expectations.

Quoth lobo94 View PostOn a similar note...you'd be surprised how many people think New Mexico is still a part of Mexico. It's been a state since 1912, and before that, a territory.New Mexico Magazine has a column called "One of Our 50 is Missing." I've had a couple of those moments myself.
It's also why our license plates say "New Mexico USA".Last edited by Pagan; 11-03-2009, 03:48 AM.It's floating wicker propelled by fire!

Quoth fireheart17 View PostI think with the exchange rate and whatnot, people would be screaming that they're being ripped off anyway...
While I did exchange some currency, the hotel I stayed at billed in USD since I was using my debit card. Food entertainment etc, I used debit also, so the only thing I really used currency for was tips.Tamezin

Well, Canada is perhaps THE most cashless country on the planet, so as long as you can swipe your card, you likely wouldn't see what the currency is anyway; the banks would handle the conversions (and charge you for it of course).
About the only thing I use cash for any more is my laundry and occasional trips to Tims (and at Tims I can use my chipped credit card). I could easly go a pay period without getting cash out (excepting my laundry funds which I replenish every few months)
