I was walking around when a store flagged me down and told me they'd just had a very strange lady in their store; they weren't worried, they just found her...strange. Apparently she'd walked in and for the next 10-minutes gave the saleswoman her life's story, which turned into a saga about how her boyfriend was cheating on her, at which point she got on her cell phone and walked-out of the store. They told me what she looked like, we laughed about the crazy people we get, and I went on my way.
A few minutes later I pass by a bench and happen to see the woman they described. She was on her cell phone, nothing out of the ordinary. I went past and into a store where I chatted with an employee, got some coupons, walked out of the store and chatted with another employee (during which time the lady on the bench got-up and walked away), left and went back to my office. Then I get a call from the main office.
They were on the phone with a woman who was complaining about the problems she's having with her boyfriend and that she was on the phone when she was surrounded by 6 Security guards who began talking about her, watching her, making her feel very uncomfortable and forcing her to leave because she was so paranoid that she was doing something wrong and that she wasn't there to cause trouble she was just having problems with her boyfriend.
The office was confused because I was the only one there!
I told the office I thought I knew exactly who they had on the phone and that another store had reported the woman acting strange and that all I had done was walk by the woman (didn't even make eye contact) and yes, I was the only one here. There was nobody in the area the woman could have even remotely thought was security.
I told my coworker later and he said it reminded him of a year ago when there was a mass text message hoax going around that a gang initiation in the area was going to involve shooting-up a mall. We had a woman call us saying that her daughter worked in one of the stores and had told her about the text and told her mother that she'd had to be escorted to her car by 5-armed security officers with bulletproof shields and how could we let such a situation happen!? I guess she was the only person who hadn't read the paper saying the text was a hoax and that her daughter was telling her some tall tales. My coworker said that if we had guns and riot shields that he wanted to know where they were being hidden!
