  • SC's Are Taking Over the World

    Even Craig's List!

(warning, this is long, I used to be a typist and I'm not afraid to use those skills, LOL)

Background: For the past year life has been a bit uneven (DH has had layoffs, we're not sure whether to stay in this area or move to be near granddaughter, etc). So we may (or may not) be moving, probably something a bit smaller as we got lucky size-wise for the price on this place, or if we stay we want to eventually do some major rennovations, etc. So perhaps because of all that, I've gotten into an extreme de-clutter mode. And because of finances, instead of hauling it off to a charity, I've spent the past year "spring cleaning via Craig's List". The house gets decluttered, things get recycled, we get a bit of cash, and someone else gets a bargain. Wins all around.

For the most part, it's been going quite well. But suddenly, the SC's are out and about in full force. Maybe before, most people who shopped on CL either believed strongly in recycling, or were happy to save a bit of cash and so nice about it, and now the economy is forcing people to shop there who don't really want to? Any other theories?

Other than a few rude people who email they definitely want something then drop off the face of the earth, or a few who set up an appointment to pick something up then never show up, things have been pretty smooth.

But I've had two really SC's in the past week.

One guy bought a mouse from me - cordless, programmable, very upscale mouse, but I knew it worked on XP and not Vista (which I said in my ad). Sold it for very little, the guy seemed a bit lacking in computer knowledge, but it had the original disk with instructions. So an hour later, I get an email accusing me of selling him a useless mouse, that I knew it wasn't working, I'd deliberately deceived him, etc. Very ranty, very rude, very insulting.

Normally, I bend over backwards to help. If he'd nicely emailed "hey, I can't get this to work, any suggestions" I'd have suggested he check batteries in the base, double check compatability with his operating system, and maybe even gone so far as to try to walk him thru installation and so forth via IM or email. But ranting and raving and accusing me of cheating him (all over less than $10, btw) was just way too much. Emailed him back that I knew the mouse worked, and I'd be happy to help him with tech support for a going rate of $75 per hour Also added it wasn't my responsibility to determine that the mouse was compatible with his operating system, or that installing the mouse (with directions on disk) was compatible with his IQ I'd be willing to bet he discovered it was some stupid little thing he was doing wrong, cause never heard from him again.

Then today, I get some paranoid woman with anger management issues. She wanted info (how wide it would cut) on a craft trimmer. But then she went off into a tirade about how I should have the info already in the ad, eleventy. The ad DID have that info, and if she'd just asked the question, I'd have been nice, we all miss things now and then. But after her rudeness, I just emailed her with the info (making it plain I was quoting the ad) and suggested in future she actually read the ad before being rude ranting about what wasn't in it.

Her next email said she wasn't sure if she should purchase the item from me, how terrible and deceitful I was because I went back to my ad on CL after her email and changed it to add the info she insists was not there in the beginning and on and on. So I just wrote her back that no problem, I didn't sell to people who were rude and accused me of deceit, & she's now blocked from my email.

Ok, so I didn't get to it right then. And even if I had, my SW just dumps it into a junk mail folder automatically from then on, so I don't have to read it if I don't want. So I saw the next email from her, stating, no, it's her choice, and she won't buy it from me because I sell "misrepresented" garbage

Ok, shoulda left it, but couldn't resist sending her a "fine, whatever", and I suggested she both look up the word "misrepresented" and get some help on her anger management problems, and all further emails from her were on block, so go away.

And yep, got one more (you know I had to check my junkmail after that, LOL) and still going on about how I lied about the ad and about my email being blocked (what did she think, if I blocked her it would "bounce back" to her or something , how I lied about changing the ad, and how I sell misrepresented garbage.

Wow. And all over her misreading and not seeing the info she wanted in an for an under $10 trimmer for paper for crafts. Just Wow.

    Madness takes it's toll....

That and the swap shop....but I think the swap shop is worse since there's hagglers that want to buy something for next to nothing and will browbeat you too.

If you haven't had the crazies before, you've just been lucky.

In another thread, I said that Craigslist is the wild west of the Internet.

Nah, you get the same sorts on Cl, too. It's just that with Cl, you can just junk their emails and never have to hear from them again unless you want to.

I'm glad I read this far down before I started on about freecycle We've had some very rude and bad mannered people contact us via that. My rule is if they can't remember to say please, it doesnt matter if no one else wants the item, they aint getting it.
Giving things away online has put me off ever wanting to attempt to actually sell anything that way
            Arp happens!

Has anyone seen the "cinder block" ad over on Craigslist? Seems the guy had a few too many idiots, who were constantly pestering him about the blocks he was trying to shift. I mean really, it's a damn cinder block. Other than (usually) being gray and used to build walls, there's not really much you need to know about them

At least you're not selling on ebay. Those two crazies would be able to completely trash you in feedback and ruin your ability to sell, and there would be literally nothing you could do about it, since ebay decided that the act of clicking a pay button was automatically worth positive feedback.

But . . . But . . .But . . .what about the exact measurements of the cinder block. And the weight . . . I'd need to know the weight so I can arrange for shipping. And then there's the PSI (pounds per square inch) because I'm looking for enough of these to build a house and I need to know how much weight/pressure they can handle. . . .

Oh and the texture . . . can you describe that in more detail? Are we talking more of a graphite gray or a lighter silver gray hue to them?

                  Need I go on further?

...which is why I don't attempt to sell anything on Ebay. For example, I have some unused model railroad stuff (nothing fancy--extra track, spare power packs, etc.) that I'd like to shift. However, with Ebay putting that policy into place, I decided against it. If it's going to sell at a reduced cost, I'd rather take the lot to the annual railroad convention, and sell it to friends

I just go with a regular garage sale if I want to get rid of stuff.

If its a large item that I want to get rid of, like the old, rusted out BBQ (still worked, but it was ancient) I will just put it out on the curb with a large sign on neon paper that says FREE.

Its amazing how fast stuff like that will vanish!

Yep, that's why I decided to go with CraigsList instead of ebay, in spite of more limited market area and not having the possiblility of it being wanted enough to be bidded up to a higher price than I'd expected. At least I can tell the rude ones off with no negative effects, LOL.

Yeah, I usually have a garage sale every year or two myself. Decided this time though I wanted to go thru the house room by room decluttering, and get rid of it as I go, rather than hold onto it until next summer (too wet for sales around here in the winter). I gather things into some sort of batches or lots so it's at least enough to make it worth listing and meeting up with someone. Really cheap items that can't be logically grouped with anything just go straight to a charity box. Things that don't sell after a few listings get added to the box, and it goes out when full.
