Stupid me, I'd not only driven his deteriorating car with expired plates, but allowed him to drive my beloved Metro with his suspended license.
    Love, Who?
I got into a similar situation in '87 with my GF's Mother's car- It had current legal stuff, I checked. 16 YO girl with probationary license made a left turn in my path *bang* and GFM's car didn't check out on the cop's computer. Turned out (GFM lied to me for months) that GFM switched the insurance to another car, which turned out not to work. So, GFM put the plates back on the first car, and then let me drive it.
    Injured-nobody
    Claiming injury-1
    Damaged cars-3
Dollars I was sued for: 325,000
My lawyer bill for traffic court and lawsuit: $2500
Amount I had to pay out of pocket to settle: $1000
Time my life was on hold: 2 1/2 years
Time my own insurance went up 20%: 3 years
Ending relationship with deceitful family: priceless
Oh, the moral is that insurance can be *much* cheaper than the alternative
    P*S

Its not that sturdy and would break in there.
Make or buy a protector for it. Just a little wallet-y thing. You can probably get something suitable at your local Big Box office superstore.

People will forge insurance cards when they find themselves uninsurable. I kept thinking, "Well duh, why didn't they just update their insurance?" before remembering that when I was younger and stupid about money, my current insurer refused to insure me because I'd been so crummy with the bills. I had to scramble to find a new insurer, and the new one charged an arm and a leg until my credit repaired itself over the year.
I am going to post a fratching about this.

because they think they'll get away with it or else they wouldn't have tried.

My wife is handicapped but we're only allowed one dangler and it is a pain for her to switch it between the two cars. So we use last year's in one car and this year's in the other. No issues yet. (crosses fingers).
Check with your DMV, you may be allowed a dangler and a plate, we have a plate on my car and a dangler for when I am riding with someone else. I keep the dangler in my bag along with the copy of the application page that is supposed to be in the same car with it.

Yep . . . they'll have plenty to talk about and build a relationship on, won't they?

                  Very stupid.

In the state of California, for example, letting someone without a license drive your car can get your vehicle impounded for 90 days. Unless you're willing to prosecute them for having stolen your car.

Cab fare is cheaper and less trouble.
