had 2 lovely gems last nite

    1) i get called up front for a price check. these never go well. i go up and a customer is trying to buy preparation h and says its supposed to be 1.50 off. i immediately know this is wrong. since i had just come from that aisle and pulled sale signs and there wasnt any for those since they are not on sale. and also since this happens all the time i know what it is.

a compare and save sign. i go over and grab it and bring it up front to her. and explain that by buying our brand you save 1.50 compared to name brand the signs says in big letters COMPARE AND SAVE

she claims were trying to trick her and that customers have to read fine print. what fine print??? it was as clear as day. and since you said u shop here all the times im sure youd understand those signs by now. sadly no customer does.

    2) another customer is looking for hair color. im certainly no expert but i can read. this customer wants garnier nutrisse in dark brown. yet with an accent calls it "dark baraown" she said it like 50 times and i wanted to slap her. anyways i find it and she tells me no thats not it. and then asks about clairol natural instincts. i find the dark brown shade. she tells me no thats not it. i explain to her multiple times that even tho it has a shade or "flavor" name like "nutmeg" it says that indeed it comes out dark brown, because it says DARK BROWN

she never bought any and requested a raincheck instead. in case we can ever pull the "dark baraown" shade she wants out of our asses.

Sounds like both customers have chronic cases of SRD (Selective Reading Disorder.)

IE, they read the part they want to read and ignore/disregard the rest of the information.

It's similar to SHD (Selective Hearing Disorder) and I've noticed from my 20+ years in retail that in a vast majority of cases, both disorders run hand in hand.

So far I can't seem to obtain any research grants to continue further investigation of these phenomenons.

That's because they don't want to hear it. They don't want to believe that something is wrong with them. Nothing is wrong, NOTHING, ya hear?

You don't need to. The yahoos in the corporate marketing department have done all the studies you'll need. They've discovered that customers are attracted by big words in pretty colors, especially words like "FREE" and "HALF-OFF".

These words dazzle them so much they can't see it actually reads "FREE with purchase" or "Buy One, Get One HALF-OFF".

And as anyone in corporate can tell you, the most important part thing is to get customers in the store. Your difficulty explaining the details of the actual sale is irrelevant.

Willful blindness, that's what it is.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

If there's pee on the seat I wipe it off and sit anyway. I always check before I sit, anyway, you don't know how many times i've gotten wet pants because some slob pissed over the seat. >_<

                      Can anyone read?

                      Short answer: No

I don't know if this certain, but I strongly suspect we are living in the most aliterate culture in the history of the world; That is, the highest ratio of people able to read to actual amount of reading done. See sig for more details.
Aliterate : A person who is capable of reading but unwilling to do so.

My boyfriend told me about a case study he had to read in college. Someone was trying to sell expensive socks for $6/pair. They weren't selling, so they created a new sign that said "Sale! 2 for $15!" The socks sold out.
