  • Yes, The Register is closed

Recently our registers were acting up. For several hours they had to shut down the registers in floral, bakery and deli designed for customer to just get a single item or two. They are in realty a PITA with contestant interruptions from prep work for transactions that 99.99% of the time occur before a SC has even finished shopping and paid up front. We had the CLOSED sign up at the affected registers, but because employees were their SC's assumed they were open/we were lazy.

Variations of the following occured all day....
    SC: Can I pay for <deli/bajery item>
M: I'm sorry but the regsiger is down.
SC" but yoooooooor her it caaaaaaaaaan't be.
M: It is. You will have to pay for your <item> up front with the rest of your shopping.
    SC: <more whining>
M: <repeat the pay up front and no I can not just take you money w/o the register>

Sadly, about half of the customers refused to get the item even though all the had to do was just had it to/tell the cashier when they got to the FE pay.

I'm surprised that your store still has deli and bakery registers. I know that before they put in Starbucks in my store, they had a register for bakery and it was sparingly used. But Deli? That sounds like a bad idea.

Our bakery never had a register but our Deli does. The keyboard is falling apart, but it does get used. NOt as much as Starbucks or the pharmacy but it does get used.

Well, when you consider that once a deli or bakery item is in the customer's hands, it goes out the door as a sale or as a waste, it's not a bad idea to have those particular items paid as they're handed out.

I know, but the OP and I work for the same supermarket company (though a few hundred miles apart), and I haven't seen many of those stores near me with that set-up.

Our bakery used to have one, but they got rid of it before I started working there. Far as I know, the deli's always had theirs, and it gets a pretty good workout.
