Not the same Grumpy Old Man I've mentioned previously. Grumpy Old Man is not an individual, it's a state of being.
Grumpy Old Man comes in and demands a discount before anything else is said by either of us. I offer him the standard $20 discount we applied to damn near everything. That's not good enough for him. I inform him I can't do anything better than that, (I could, but already I don't particularly like this guy.)
He grudgingly accepts that's the best discount he's going to get, THEN asks how much is the rate anyway. I inform him. Cue another explosion. I am stoically unmoved, and say nothing. GOM bitches that he stays here all the time, and he's never paid more than $50/night, after taxes. I've been here since last summer, I'm sure I've never seen him, and I don't recognize his name.
GOM asks what time we start serving breakfast. We don't. This location doesn't do a continental breakfast, and hasn't since 2003. GOM goes off again.
He asks for his free newspaper. We stopped giving them out free about 8 months ago. That's a policy I don't personally agree with, but it's not my call to make. And I don't have any left anyway.
GOM rants on again. I wasn't really listening, but I'm almost certain he actually said 'rabble' during his bitchfit.
I check him in, and bring up his file in our database to satisfy my own curiosity;
Grumpy Old Man does indeed have a long history with this hotel: He stayed here for 1 night in 1997, and 1 night in 2001.
