I loved The Spirit and Sky Captain and the World of Tommorrow because I was looking for them to be tributes to the Golden Age comics and radio serials, and they were exactly that kind of camp I went in looking for. I can imagine thay would be disappointing if you expected hard science and dark, serious, modern comic-type stories.
I also loved The Spirit and Sky Captain, as well as The Shadow. I have most, if not all, of The Spirit comics and, while the movie did take a few liberties, I enjoyed it very much. My only complaint about the movie version of The Spirit is how they portrayed the Octopus. In the comic they never showed anything more than his gloved hands. Had they done that in the movie, I think it would have better.

As for Pulp Fiction, I have it on tape and quit watching it because the second scene, with Bruce Willis, was just too long and boring. I might give it another try some day.

I've only walked out on two movies that I can remember.

One was As Good as it Gets (I think, it had Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson), where in the just the first few minutes, I lost count of the number of times the boom mic dipped into frame. I figured if they missed all that, the rest of the movie can't be that good.

The other was Lost in Translation. I went in thinking it was going to be a humorous comparison of Japanese and American culture, but just ended up being about a guy having a mid-life crisis and hanging out with people half his age. I still can't sit through it.

Didn't ask for a refund on either of those.

Actually, that's mostly the theatre's fault.

Yes, really. They didn't frame it properly. They were probably cutting off part of the bottom of the frame to do it, too. Don't ask why, but it's a thing.

Uh-oh... The Spirit is on my NetFlix queue. Now I don't know if I should cancel it or not.
Watch it and make your own decision. God knows I enjoy certain movies that everyone else hates for my own reasons. I also hate certain movies that everyone else loves for the same reason. Keep it on your list and see if it works for you.

Ditto'd. And if you don't like it, do what I did. Mock the hell out of it.

It's like I've said for awhile now: Some movies just require that you be in the right state of mind.
I looked up the comic before seeing it, and I've liked movies like The Phantom, so I was expecting something a bit silly, campy, and over the top. But between the mix-and-match time period, constant puns, and acting that seemed more fitting for a SNL episode than a major movie, I just couldn't sit through it.

The toilet in the fight scene, the awkwardly done flashbacks, the entire scene in the office and it's accompanying flurry of ass jokes... the whole thing felt less "campy" and more haphazard and forced.
