  • "Shoot the messenger" syndrome (No we don't have it!)

    Ok,

So my store was expecting to get Nintendo Wiis in this week. Last week we were telling people they would be coming in between Wednesday and Saturday. Sadly, we could be no specific than that. Our computer system only shows our shipping a day in advance.

Thursday comes around and I'm getting a lot of calls about the Wii. Seeing as how it's not on the computer I assume there aren't any coming in. Then I get a call from my DM: "There are some Wiis coming in today or tomorrow but they won't be listed in your system." Store policy on Wiis, is first come, first serve. NO reserves, NO Holds, NO advanced orders. Perhaps you can see where this is going.

Brilliant! Now I'll have absolutely ZERO warning if they show up and no idea how many are coming. 10 am we open the store. By 11:30 I had a lineup of 10 people I had given cards to so if the systems came we had an order to go by, but they couldn't leave and come back later with the card. One guy upon being informed the card was not in fact a claim check to pick up a system at a later time promptly tore it up and threw it right back at me. Well Merry freakin' Christmas to you too!

A few of the geniuses I had amongst the 58 000 people asking about Wiis:

    (phone convo)
Customer: "Any Wiis coming in today?"
me: "possibly, we are expecting them either today or tomorrow but I have no idea when or how many."
Customers: "When do you usually get your shipments"
me: "typically before 1, however these are coming direct from Nintendo."
Customer: "and you have no idea when?"
(I just said THAT, not very attentive are we?
    me: "no I don't."
Customer: "do you have a number for nintendo?"
me: "no I don't, if you want to call do you have to look it up."
Customer: (evilly) oh don't worry, I WILL.

    ook.

Customer: when will you be getting Wiis?
me: not sure probably today or tomorrow
customer: so you don't know when?
(repeat 10X until he FINALLY figured out that I really did not know)

Customer: You getting any Wiis today?
Me: should be either today or tomorrow but I don't know when or how many.
Customer: What about Wal-Mart or Future Shop? Do you know if they are getting any today?
(yes our competitors always inform us exactly when they are expecting stock to give us an advantage
Me: Sorry I have no idea, I can only speak for this store.
Customer: (in that "I can't believe you don't know" tone) FINE.

Fast forward to today. Well they are in our system now and apparently we'll have 6 for sale. We have 8 people outside the door at open. Manager tells me we're not allowed to say until 1 PM how many systems we are getting. Oh brilliant, so we have to force people to wait three hours out in the cold just to be told there was no chance they'd be getting a system today. Yeah, THAT'll win us some customers. Thankfully a head office note from that morning said that yes we could tell people at open how many units there were so at least that didnt' escalate.

Woman comes in about one and rips a strip off me and my manager for not knowing much about when we are getting the Wiis. She says she's really pissed off about all of this and won't buy her Wii at our store but somewhere else. I tried to explain to her that this was all Nintendo's doing and she'd have the same problems anywhere but she didn't really buy it. She just ran us down some more and asked for our customer service 1-800 number to bitch about something that is totally out of our control.

And to cap it all off, at around 2 the DM called our store and told us now we aren't getting some until monday at the earliest. So we had to inform 6 people who waited around 5 hours each TWO DAYS in a row now that sorry, you're out of luck again. What an angry and bitter bunch that was.

Finally, to top this all off, we know have an official response to: "When are you getting Wiis in?" The official response, as given to us by head office is (Drumroll) "We don't know."

Not "likely sometime next week, keep checking back." or "we're unsure at the moment, check back daily for updates", but "I don't know". Well doesn't that just make us sound like a competent business?

I'm going to go through this alll over again next week too, at least until those freaking things finally show up.

So the moral of the story, for me at least is: Nintendo can kiss my ass!

    Thanks for letting me vent.

sigh... so glad i dont work where they are for sale, i think i would have snapped at a customer by now, especially if i was working while at college due to finals and final papers haha
bravo to everyone working at stores dealing with this and not snapping, hang in there!
the thing i dont get is people kept bashing sony for not having enough ps3's at first and praising nintendo for having more, but while they had more they still didnt have nearly enough
i dont think its possible to make enough without making them for a long time before starting to sell them which also doesnt make sense
people need to calm down and not care so much about the system, i think a lot only care cause its christmas which is another rant

Damn! I swear I got those same people! Even the one who said they were going to bitch to Nintendo. And of course the people who ask "Who else would have it." Just those people where I would love to say: "Look, they are our competitor, and they don't tell us anything regarding their stock, the same as us. So PISS OFF!"

Customer wants a Wii, PS3, or a pair of Camo Mossberg 535s

I had a customer come in last Saturday and said that she was going to try and get a PS3 or a Wii for her kids. Since she and her husband figured that there wasn't a chance they they would get either (Smart move) they decided that they would just get each of their kids a shotgun for Christmas. An easy $600+ sale for me: a pair of Mossberg 535 and a case of shells for each one.

Even better, she asked if I knew where she could get duck or deer wraping paper so she could put them under the tree. I love living in North Dakota.

That is like that at my store, we are getting shipments coming in that we suppose to have when we first opened. And to top it off, because of that, most of our customers have stopped coming in, which we can't blame them.
