  • Who says things like this????

I was just reminded of a story from a former coworker. He has a disability, something displaysia, and his ankles turn in and he walks differently. But I've seen him walk very fast, and he does stage performances. Very friendly, outgoing guy. Great person. So one day he was taking a customer to something she wanted and she told him, "You need to learn to walk better." Um, seriously?? He does very well; he was hired as a salesfloor person, you know, doing some ofthe same kind of stuff Irv does. WTH?

ETA: I ran into said CW right after I posted this and he reminnded me that she had other remarks, such as advice he should try skating to correct the problem.

    Seshat's self-help guide:
    1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
    2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
    3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
    4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Or even on the off-chance that they do, they just don't care.

Sounds to me though like the SC has a handicap . . . Brain to Mouth filter failure. Which Karma has a way of dealing with when one least expects it.

I doubt this was a filter failure, it sounds more like SC was a complete jerk. What she said was deeply hurtful/insulting and not helpful at all. I can't begin to imagine how terrible it is to have a disability that someone picks on. Some people.
A lion however, will only devour your corpse, whereas an SC is not sated until they have destroyed your soul. (Quote per infinitemonkies)

wait isn't a brain needed for that filter to even exist?
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

Should've said, "You need to think better".

Had a woman once ask me, out of the blue, as I finished bagging her purchase, "Do you have CP?"
Being a denizen of /b/, my mind went, "Child Porn? Really? In a craft store" though I think I actually said, "Zuh?"
              "You know, Cerebral Palsy?"
So, other than the 'zuh' I've been erudite and expeditious at getting your purchase rung up... the fact that I can't use my left hand, and my arm is pretty constantly held to my chest, does NOT give me CP.
              "I call murder on that!"

This past christmas I had a bunch of complaints from customers about one of my coworkers. He has Aspergers syndrome so sometimes he has trouble making eye contact or little things will overwhelm him.

I was so disgusted when people would come up to me complaining about his "poor service" and once I explained that they may have misinterpreted his behavior because of his condition they would deny it and just tell me that he's "awful" and "hates his job".

People with Aspberger's sometimes have trouble understanding verbal and visual social cues. With work, it can be overcome, mostly.

If the rep is answering your questions, is polite, helpful what does it matter if he has trouble looking people in the eye.

If you're being a SC, odds are you'll irritate the most tolerate of people. Some of us are just better at hiding it than others.
