She probably told him her 'version' of the incident and it probably had a few embellishments in it (I'm telling you honey he solicited me! I was so scared of the pervert)
OMG - that went right over my head. What a bitch!

OP, please don't blame your tech for this. Ugh.

Heh, I misread the OP to think that Jane was your third-in-command, and wondered why the tech was taking any flak at all. Reading the rest of the thread cleared that up, so I really don't think that anything was done wrong on your shop's end.

        My guess at what happened:

J tells Kay "A virus put porn on your computer."

Jane overhears(?) and teases Kay. Kay laughs because Jane is her boss.

        J leaves.

Jane continues to rag Kay about having porn on her computer, and makes jokes to everyone else in the office at Kay's expense. The story begins to take on a life of its own, going from "a virus put some porn on Kay's computer" to "Kay's computer was full of porn!" to "OMG, we had to get someone in to service Kay's computer, and what did they find? Millions of porn files!"

Kay comes home frustrated and wanting to smack Jane, but can't because Jane's her boss. She vents to Hubby, and mentions "I wish the tech hadn't said that about porn where Jane could hear. Jane thinks this is hilarious. She's going to go on about this for years. I'll never live this down."

Hubby is annoyed that his wife is so upset, and goes flying off the handle, not realizing that wife is angry at her tackless boss, moreso than at your poor tech.

But we don't because lots of it's disgusting.

I'm confused. What does the husband have to do with it? Does he work there too?

Not at all. My guess is that the woman's co-workers were joking with her about downloading porn. She laughed about it at first, but over a day or two it must have been bothering her to the point where she complained to her husband. Based on the phone conversation between J and Kay yesterday, it sounded like Kay was blowing everything WAY out of proportion and her husband decided he needed to take charge.

On a certain level, I can understand the husband's being irate. If I was married and someone was accusing my wife of downloading porn and announcing it to all her co-workers, I'd be upset, too. But it sounded to me like the wife was over-exaggerating everything and the husband probably wasn't aware that 99% of what she was telling him was bullshit.

The owner of the company hasn't called yet, and probably won't... I did have J try to call him today to make sure he was aware of how it happened from her point of view (and reality, as opposed to the wife's fantasy world ) but he wasn't there and didn't call back.

I dunno. I almost want to just pack it all in and drive to Newfoundland and start a new life. Some of these computer customers are going to drive me out of my mind.

Yes, please dont let J get into trouble due to those two idjits. Someone @ that office is blowing things way out of proportion.

I'm one of those rare managers with a spine. It would take nothing short of J drawing and quartering a customer on our front step to get me to fire her.

Okay, maybe not, but I trust her judgement and her professionalism. I always step up to bat for our employees unless they're clearly in the wrong. And even then, they don't do stuff to be vindictive or anything. If they make a mistake, that's all it is - an accident.

Okay. And if you have any qualms about moving to New Jersey I'll be happy to relocate.

Yes, I agree with this COMPLETELY; or that it was something similar going on. The tech did nothing wrong.

I'm not much to look at, but I do have the coolest toys.

(and a Street Fighter II arcade game. Bragging is wrong, but I love it so)

Interesting postscript to the story. The woman who had the virus in the first place needed some sort of real estate software re-installed on her system and a printer installed so I went over myself to take care of it.

I installed the printer but had to call the software company's tech support for help (which wasn't available yet, as they're on Pacific time). She never mentioned a word about what had happened between her and J. The owner of the company never mentioned a word to me, just our usual hellos and friendly banter.

I sent my other tech, G, over to get the software installed and it went okay. He also didn't hear anything else with regards to the "incident".

So it seems that everything's cool now. But jeez... I hate drama. I really do.
