  • Watch out for the tax office

First proper post, so I hope it reads okay. It's long but has a happy ending

This happened a few months into my current job. I was still learning, so I was hiding in the corner making coffee, while my manager L ran around and did what he did while serving customers.

Enter some ladies from the tax office. Note - we give a free 'upsize' to anyone who works in the rather large center (Biggest in our state). We had recently gotten asked to check where they worked, due to the fact we were giving out so many.

So, they say they work in the centre.

L: great, where do you work?
    SC: the tax office
L: I'm fairly sure that isn't part of the centre.
SC: What do you mean? We ALWAYS get our free upsize!
L: Well look, today I'll be happy to give it to you, but I'm going to check with the boss and centre to see if you are counted.
They muttered something else I missed, since I'd just finished a drink and was chatting to the customer. L wandered off again, and I finished their drinks and called them out.

SC: Did you hear what he said?
    M: Yes?
SC: He was very rude. We want to talk to your manager!
    M: You just did.
    SC: What do you mean!
At this point L wanders back to save me
L: Whats the problem here Fly
M: They want to talk to you
    L looks at them.
SC: You were very rude and we want to talk to your boss.
    M: Sorry he's not here.
L was still a bit dumbfounded by that statement
SC: Well then give us his phone number
L: we can't give that out. However if you would like to complain you can send an email to head office.
SC went on a rant about the bad customer service, how we wouldn't give out details, how everyone else gave it to them, etc, all the while looking at me like I was going to back them up. I adopted a wonderful blank stare. After a bit of this L butted in and said
L: Look, I gave you your upsize, that is it for today!
They huffed and left. Now to the great part of the story. Where we win!

One of our beloved regulars also worked there. L hit him up a little later and explained the situation. This man, R, is one of their supervisors! They were reprimanded, though we asked not to be too harsh on them, since they could have lost their jobs. Head office forwarded two emails from these people to us, without caring. My owner repsonded with - you will no longer receive any upsizes.

The best part? As government representatives, they aren't allowed to accept upsizes or discounts, its considered bribery. The massive fuss they stunk up over 50c nearly cost them their jobs!

You gotta love those self-pwnage stories!
    "Wouldn't that be unethical?"

Um, wouldn't that mean everyone at the center shouldn't be receiving upsizes? So, maybe your restaurant should stop offering?

Except that a) He said the tax office isn't technically at the centre, and b) not everyone at the centre is a government employee.

As sucky as she was, I'd hate to see someone lose their job over accepting a free coffee; that's harsh. I wonder if that work rule was put into place to keep employees from abusing their positions?

Where I work a store gives me a free coffee when I bring in their newspapers. I consider it a trade of services but yeah, they control the coffee so they totally own me!

There aren't many government services in the building itself - and none of them ask for freebies. These guys just got a bit entitled. I've since discovered their building - it's a block away over the road, definately not part of our building.

P.S when we were told they might lose their jobs, we backed off so they didn't. Your right, its way too harsh, but it is a taxation office and I can see why the rule is there

You've hit on it. It's an ethics thing. Since the employee likely has the ability to make nice (or not nice) things happen for a business's tax file, it's best to avoid even the appearance of taking a bribe or having a conflict of interest.
The best karma is letting a jerk bash himself senseless on the wall of your polite indifference.
