  • Its the law. Accept it. Embrace it dumbass or get the hell out!

This is one which is fairly typical in ym job. I have an endless list of age restricted products legally and by company policy, now only twice have I actually had a need to challenege 21 a customer. And the first time they had an argument with me and suprisingly second time another argument. So I feel I should share it.

    Case 1:

Background: Store had just opened. It was late into day things were calming down and i was being watched by all forms of management from head office. So i had to be on my best behaviour.

    Me: Hi. Hows are today?
SC: [Hands me a DVD for age 15. Customer is no more than 10]
Me: I am sorry but due to law in the Uk can not sell this to you.
SC: I want it though. [She calls sister]

Sister at this point comes out with the following. i will by it then!

Me: I am sorry but I can not as I know you will be handing it to her.
SC: Thats not the point I'll do as I please.
Me: Again i am sorry I can not allow you to buy it. [At this point things are bad for me as a cashier next to me is saying just sell her it. i am sticking to principle and law now!]
SC: look I pay your wage and customer is always right. Sell me the fucker or i will tear you a new one.
Me: Miss it is a criminal offence for me to sell this product to you now. If you are going to continue this tirade with me I would strongly encourage you to leave before security must escort you.

SC storms off swearing and informing me how she will never shop here again. There goes our profits!

    Case 2:

Background: Large que and the customer is on a lunch from her work. She comes to desk with knives. Customer looks younger than 18 so challenge 21 is enforced.

Me: Hi. how are you. Ahhhh sorry I can't sell you this without ID, its the law!
SC: What????!!! Thats ridicolous neve rheard of such a thing!
Me: Well sadly it is. Do you have ID.
SC: No, but i don't require it. i am getting these knives no matter what.
Me: Miss i can noty allow you to purchase without ID. It is Uk law.
    SC: Change the law then?

At this point I loose the will to live. And guess what i get here the know it all (KIA)customer beside her.

KIA: Place it in with my shopping.
Me: Then i can't sell you the knives as SC with get them from you. its a criminal offence for you to do that and for me to allow it.
KIA: ASDA never challenge knive sales!
Me: Thats not the point. They should. its the law.
KIA: I will be asking ASDA about this and sending a letter of complaint to ASDA about you.
Me: Thats fine but that does not change the law.
SC: Lool here pal I am busy just sell them.
Me: I can't. Get ID or fuck off.
SC: Give me a few minutes.
    Me: ok.
SC: returns 5 minutes later with a driving license proving her age. How hard is it to do that.

Now I was left with KIA still argueing the point.

KIA: You could sell that to her you were just being a bastard to her.
Me: Miss its the law I was following and company policy. Without sounding funny none of this is worth being fired for. [My superviser now wlaks in and as does duty manager.] Superviser and Duty manager could you please confirm what i have been saying.
    They confirm
KIA: I am raising a complaint about all of you next time i get to ASDA.

She can not grasp that she is not in ASDA!

My advice to customers. Its the law accept it embrace it or get the hell out. YOUR HOLDING UP THE FUCKING QUEUE.

Oohh No, remember, THEY are the customers, therefore, THEY make the rules... according to them >_> (emphasis on they because they always use emphasis too)

They fought the law and the law won. Now I'm gonna have that song stuck in my brain.
A lion however, will only devour your corpse, whereas an SC is not sated until they have destroyed your soul. (Quote per infinitemonkies)

I'm not going to have that song stuck. I was just watching the Nostalgia Critic's review of Judge Dread, so instead I keep picturing Stallone shouting "I am the LAW!"

I have only had to ONCE card someone for age restricted products.

Around the time someone died from hypothermia due to drinking nearly a whole bottle of vanilla essence (very high alcohol content...) we had age restrictions on that and food dyes. That's gone now, but I only had to card someone once for it. Thankfully she understood why and showed me her provisional licence. (In Australia, you can show drivers licence, passport, proof of age card or a learner's/provisional driver's permit)

On the other hand, my old manager had to call security once because someone nearly threw a milkshake on him.

Also, I should add, that in Australia, we do Challenge 25. Basically it's like challenge 21, but obviously with a raised age difference. What's funny enough is that the sign outside my old store's liquor section tells customers to "Take it as a compliment." (I'll see if I can get pics since I'm heading down that way next weekend)

I got carded for a lotto ticket. The same station did not card me for buying fifteen gallons of gas.

Because a lotto ticket is much more dangerous.

Funny story, I was in tesco once, while in college, was buying a few cans of Fosters and coincidentally, a small travel sewing kit (which had small scissors in it), guess which one i got asked for ID one, hint: the beer went first and it wasn't that

Another time, went in a off licence, bought some beers, went back a few minutes later to buy some cigs, to which i was promtly asked for ID (at that time the legal age was 16 and 18 for beer not 21 as it is now)

Here in the USA they made us the Sudafed police. Any time we sell something with pseudoephedrine in it, we have to take ID and write it down in a register which the customer must then sign; this is because some bright boy figured out how to make methamphetamine out of it and they want to be able to track who's buying large quantities. Surprisingly I've had very few complaints about this, I was expecting a lot more when it started. Maybe I've just been lucky so far.

I got ID'd once when I was sitting on the beach minding my own business in the middle of the day.Unknown to me, I was wearing clothes which matched the school uniform of one of the local schools, and as I could not produce ID I got taken to the local police station to await the headmistress of the school, with all the other truants they had rounded up that day.

Headmistress said she did not recognise me as one of her pupils, that would be because as I had been trying to explain to the police officer, I was 25 at the time.
Customer "why did you answer the phone if you can't help me?"

As someone who genuinely needs sudafed for a recurrent sinus problem from time to time, I can guarantee that if you need it right there and then you'll sign anything.

Of course, those who need it for other purposes come under the banner of your mileage may vary.

They just let me go again, it was years ago and I didn't think to complain about it.I just accepted I should have had some ID and that the officer was doing his job, and that it would be sorted out as soon as the headmistress arrived.I was a bit annoyed about it.
