This is one which is fairly typical in ym job. I have an endless list of age restricted products legally and by company policy, now only twice have I actually had a need to challenege 21 a customer. And the first time they had an argument with me and suprisingly second time another argument. So I feel I should share it.
Case 1:
Background: Store had just opened. It was late into day things were calming down and i was being watched by all forms of management from head office. So i had to be on my best behaviour.
Me: Hi. Hows are today?
SC: [Hands me a DVD for age 15. Customer is no more than 10]
Me: I am sorry but due to law in the Uk can not sell this to you.
SC: I want it though. [She calls sister]
Sister at this point comes out with the following. i will by it then!
Me: I am sorry but I can not as I know you will be handing it to her.
SC: Thats not the point I'll do as I please.
Me: Again i am sorry I can not allow you to buy it. [At this point things are bad for me as a cashier next to me is saying just sell her it. i am sticking to principle and law now!]
SC: look I pay your wage and customer is always right. Sell me the fucker or i will tear you a new one.
Me: Miss it is a criminal offence for me to sell this product to you now. If you are going to continue this tirade with me I would strongly encourage you to leave before security must escort you.
SC storms off swearing and informing me how she will never shop here again. There goes our profits!
Case 2:
Background: Large que and the customer is on a lunch from her work. She comes to desk with knives. Customer looks younger than 18 so challenge 21 is enforced.
Me: Hi. how are you. Ahhhh sorry I can't sell you this without ID, its the law!
SC: What????!!! Thats ridicolous neve rheard of such a thing!
Me: Well sadly it is. Do you have ID.
SC: No, but i don't require it. i am getting these knives no matter what.
Me: Miss i can noty allow you to purchase without ID. It is Uk law.
SC: Change the law then?
At this point I loose the will to live. And guess what i get here the know it all (KIA)customer beside her.
KIA: Place it in with my shopping.
Me: Then i can't sell you the knives as SC with get them from you. its a criminal offence for you to do that and for me to allow it.
KIA: ASDA never challenge knive sales!
Me: Thats not the point. They should. its the law.
KIA: I will be asking ASDA about this and sending a letter of complaint to ASDA about you.
Me: Thats fine but that does not change the law.
SC: Lool here pal I am busy just sell them.
Me: I can't. Get ID or fuck off.
SC: Give me a few minutes.
Me: ok.
SC: returns 5 minutes later with a driving license proving her age. How hard is it to do that.
Now I was left with KIA still argueing the point.
KIA: You could sell that to her you were just being a bastard to her.
Me: Miss its the law I was following and company policy. Without sounding funny none of this is worth being fired for. [My superviser now wlaks in and as does duty manager.] Superviser and Duty manager could you please confirm what i have been saying.
They confirm
KIA: I am raising a complaint about all of you next time i get to ASDA.
She can not grasp that she is not in ASDA!
My advice to customers. Its the law accept it embrace it or get the hell out. YOUR HOLDING UP THE FUCKING QUEUE.
