I encountered the "lack of instructions" problem in a high school English class. The assignment was to write a short story, so many words etc. So I wrote one and handed it in. The teacher took points off because it didn't have a moral or message, although I did make up one on the spur of the moment while discussing it with her. But she never told us the story had to have a moral or a message.
I do like what I later read about writing: "If you've got a message, use Western Union."
