That being said....I once made a pillow out of old shorts....Thats the extent of my sewing experience.
My mom had a friend of hers make a pillow out of one of my old college t-shirts...it was white and was pretty yellowed (was probably at least 12 years old), but I couldn't quite bring myself to toss it. She cut off the sleeves and the neck, and made it into a square pillow, with black cord trim around the seams (to match the drawing printed on the back).

I made a few little pillows when I was a kid (just rectangles) and I also made a bunch of hair scrunchies when they were the cool thing to wear.

The most ambitious things I ever did was a pillow shaped like lips (it was that or a frog for our first 7th-grade home-ec project), and a fuzzy stuffed stork that I made from a kit (our big project we got to choose whatever we wanted from the catalog); I gave it to my cousin, who was pregnant at the time.

At this point, I can sew on a button and repair small holes in seams, but that's about it.

Not the most flattering picture of myself
I think you look very beautiful. Who wants to look flat anyway?
Why do they make Superglue but not Batglue?

I like to sew. Nay, I love to sew. Unfortunately sewing machines hate my guts so I tend to do as much of it by hand as possible.

I specialize in medieval and renaissance clothing. That is me in black, the sleeves are in a small basket that I am standing in front of - it was hot and I took them off to stay cool, and I am not wearing the plastron to cover the bodice lacing yet.

Bah! It took me 4 months to make a shift. I suspect that the knitting ate into my sewing time. That and the "OMG, the pattern is completely wrong, I need to re-sew some seams" time I added to it. Twice. I'm cheating and machine-hemming on the kirtle (cote? What cote?) before I whip the pieces together. I can pick out the machine stitches and fix them later.

The above projects are me experimenting. I, however, found instructions that told me how to experiment, followed them, and now have a much better understanding, with less of a need for instructions. It's great! (Experimenting all the way, but that doesn't mean you can't plan in advance for it).
