Now now, it's still American beer. It's nowhere near being the world's best beer.
I have to step up to the plate for American beer. We make some of the best, and most interesting, beer in the world. There's a huge variety of it. The US is undergoing a craft brewing bonanza at the moment. The Philadelphia area, for example, has several excellent breweries in the immediate area, including (but not limited to):

    Philadelphia Brewing company
    Yards Brewing Company
Dogfish Head (delaware, but still in the area and it's fairly famous)
    Sly Fox
    Flying Fish
    Victory Brewing Co.
    Stoudts Brewing Co.

Not to mention the multiple brew pubs in the area.

Unfortunately for the rest of the world, the craft brewers are primarily regional. Take PBC for example. They make some excellent stuff. But you'lll never find it outside of the Philadelphia area. Yards brewing (which is what PBC used to be before they split up into two separate, independent breweries - but hey two breweries within walking distance of my house!) was similar, but they're expanding into other states such as Virginia.

You're lucky if the good stuff makes it out of their given region never mind making it out of the country. So other country's impression of US beer is limited primarily to to the macro brews like Bud, Miller, and Coors; which I agree, really stink. At least Sam Adams is available overseas, although I don't think they sell their better varieties very much overseas.

Of course, there's also the growing number of people brewing their own beer at home.

People think of American beer as Budweiser and Miller, etc. Pee in a can. There are some amazing brews in the states! I didn't used to like beer, but it's winning me over! Don't judge American beer until you've tried REAL American beer, not the beer flavored water.

As Monty Python put it: it's like making love in a canoe. (I make use of that to describe the national lagers here.)

That. That statement makes me want to cry. I live in Utah, where you're hard pressed to find craft beers. None of the New Belgium beers are sold near me (I've gone 20 miles in all directions, and have yet to find a single one.), There's occasionally a few Pyramid Brewing company's offerings around, and every so often, a Big Sky Brewing co's beer - Moose Drool. the rest are big national "beers", or the big well known imports like guinness, heineken, and a few others.

You're making me want to quit my job, pack up, and just head for the hills in the hopes of finding employment in a real state with real beer. :-P

AFAIK, that's due to Utah's crappy laws on beer. Come to the coasts! We have beer a plenty here.

Doesn't Utah have Wasatch Brewing Company, which makes Polygamy Porter? That, by the way, always makes me laugh...

Yeah...It is directly due to the crappy alcohol laws. I moved here from Texas for job reasons. Until I can get a job elsewhere that pays better, I'm stuck in the prohibition era (Utah seems to be behind the times by anywhere from 30-60 years on most things, save for technology).

Yes. Polygamy Porter isn't bad...as long as you don't drink it expecting a Porter. If you drink it expecting a dark ale, nothing stronger than New Belgium's Fat Tire, you won't be disappointed, but a Porter it is not.
