In my first (post-university) job, I'd routinely take the backup tape with me while evacuating the building during fire drills. Of course, the (open) shelf where the daily backups were kept was on the direct route from my desk to the nearest fire exit, so it was a simple "grab while passing" that didn't slow me down at all.

that was the same situation for me - except it was the all important coffee machine.
When we did an evac drill - my then boss saw me with the coffee machine in my arms - he burst out laughing. He said I was standing all innocent, holding a coffee machine.
But, I figured, hey the coffee machine has a name, so I am going to save it...

When I was in college, the computer lab (it was its own building) and professors offices building burned to the ground. A few weeks later, we were shocked to find out the reason.
Arson investigators had picked through the structure's remains thinking the fire had been intentional, only to find out that it had been purely accidental and totally ironic. The fire started when the fire suppression system which was being installed, short circuited and caught some ceiling tiles on fire.
Yes, the fire extinguishers started a fire...Learn wisdom by the follies of others.
