Anyway, I got this gem out of him.

SHU: what's a deaf person... who are you.
Me: Deaf people are people who cannot hear. They will be typing their part of the conversation to me which I will read to you, please speak slowly so I can type what you say to them. Please also allow for a slight delay as they type their responses.
SHU: I still don't understand this concept of deaf.
Me: They can't hear, they have no hearing.
SHU: I still don't understand... this must be an American thing, I never heard of such a person back home.
Yes, ladies and gents, according to this restaurateur there are no deaf people in China. I am well and truly amazed, 1 billion people and not a single person who is deaf.
