I have only ever found one place that makes a better doughnut than KK, and that's a little Amish bakery about 45 minutes from here. I only get them occasionally, usually when one of my co-workers brings them in for everyone, but they are amazing.

Oh well, I have some very ripe bananas.. I shall have to make some banana bread
Mmmm. I did a banana cake for the county fair one year. It tasted amazing, but there was a problem with either the baking soda or the oven and it didn't rise at all. I nommed on the delicious and very dense result all that day.

I think part of the thing about KK donuts is that their raised. I don't like raised doughnuts normally. I'm a fan of buttermilk ones and old fashioneds, really, as well as various cake types. The closest I get to raised is if they've got cream filling.

Bet you blasphemers would change your tune if you ever went in there when they were making them and the bastards were literally rolling out of the oven and into your sticky little hand moments later.
        Now I'm hungry . . . . *drooling*

Speaking of donuts, I stopped by the DD Thursday and picked up a fritter for Mom and saw they had the vanilla creme filled donuts made now with the powdered sugar on top like they used to.

Needless to say, I walked out of there with 2 of those vanilla creme filled, one apple fritter and a cup of coffee.

I'm now in love with their coffee . . . . unfortunately I have to wait until payday to go back - and Wednesday's a long way off right now . . . .

I've never had a fresh Krispy Kreme, but there's a really tiny local place a short-ish walk from me that has the most delicious donuts ever. They're really tiny little things, a bit bigger than a donut hole, and when you walk in, they're making them right in front of you. You don't even have to wait for a special time when they make them fresh - they're always fresh and hot and oh-so-delicious!

Oh, $deity, for the love of tiny doughnuts... *drools copiously*

One of the joys of attending crafts shows and such is the mini doughnut vendor that is almost guaranteed to be on site and have a massive line, always.

I prefer our local donut shop. They have fritters to die for.

Sounds like Austin, TX. Man V. Food did a bit there, and it's been on a couple of other Travel channel shows.

And this entire thread brings to mind a quote I heard, attributed to Ann Landers (I think - may have been Abby).

Sorry.... I can't stand KK donuts in any way, shape, or form. They're tasteless, over-puffy, over-sweet, and have no substance. Give me a real doughnut any day
                    Thank-you!

If I want a doughnut and Krispy Kreme is all that's around I'll eat maybe one, but then I have to drink a gallon of milk to get the sickeningly sweet taste out of my mouth, then go wash my hands to get it off.

I've been told that more times than I care to count, and you know what, if the only way to enjoy it is to show up at the asscrack of dawn when they first open (per a former coworker's claim) then I think I'll pass.

Like I said, I can eat one, and I enjoy it, but the aftermath, blech.

If you're anywhere near the east side of Cincinnati - you have to stop by this little shop called Holtman's Donuts. I used to be a huge KK fan until I stumbled across this place, and I haven't been back since! It's family owned/operated and they bake fresh twice a day. The best time to go is when they open in the evening around 7:30pm, you can get all the varieties warm and fresh and the service is amazing. They'll gladly let you sample anything, and if the line gets long (which is common) they'll give out donuts to the well-behaved kids in line for being so patient. The screamers/whiners get nothing...

Check it out if you can...it's like a dozen orgasms in a box!

You won't be sorry Peppergirl! I live on the Milford/Loveland border - the shop is up 28 just *thisfar* out of Milford. If you happen to know where Branch-Hill Guinea Pike is, it's only about 1/2 mile past that on the right.

Yum! If the kids weren't in bed I'd be on my way now...

                              Re: Donuts.

Never had a piping hot fresh Krispy Kreme donut, so I can't judge those. I'd probably be inclined to be disappointed about them, after hearing so much about them.

                              Dunkin Donuts, though. Yum.

                              And, re: Five Guys.

I live in Northern Va. Home of the franchise. I love going into a 5 Guys and looking at the "endorsements" on the bulletin boards.

For those who don't know: many 5 Guys chains have these bulletin boards on the walls, with pieces of paper and golf pencils on hand. The boards will be covered with these papers, with written messages gushing about the awesomeness of the 5 Guys Burger and drawings and the like.
