There's not really much in the way of "tree-hugging nonsense" in the movie.

It's much more a "natives versus invaders" story. With the usual bits about more advanced tech not necessarily being representative of how civilized you are and all that. And some really awesome nature shots that are more about wonder and discovery than any sort of ecological message.

    "It's Fern Gully

10 stars in my opinion and I intend to see it.

    Also:
    Alice, Repo Men, Kick-Ass

Didn't see it, don't care to see it.
Me, either. But the reason I don't want to see it is that I can't stand James Cameron.

Me neither. I was put off James Cameron movies for good back when Titanic was out and my girlfriend at the time, who'd probably seen the damn movie five times already, dragged me along.

Meh, the things you do for love when you're an awkward teen and your squeeze wants to see this flick that bypasses her brain and goes straight to her crotch.

So I had to sit there and watch it and my girlfriend cried hysterically and I "consoled" her and sat there thinking "Sink the fucking ship already!"

And then, at the end of the year (by which time we weren't dating anymore but still friends) at the school talent show, she decided to sing "My Heart Will Go On," but God bless her she couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. My two friends accompanying her on the piano were struggling to contain their laughter.

Ever since then I've had no desire to see James Cameron movies. Future ones also.

I wasn't that fussed about the movie, but someone wanted to see it, so I went too. We saw it in 3D, and it was pretty cool. I couldn't tell you much about it, other than the fact that the jungle lights up at night, and I was impressed!

It looked amazing. The plot? Meh. Not my kind of thing, even if it was new.

Nightmare on Elm Street remake, on the other hand, I am looking forward to.

It was a more "Dances with Wolves" than "FernGully," really.

James Cameron used to make good movies: Aliens, Terminator, Terminator 2, True Lies, The Abyss. Sadly he took a wrong turn at an iceberg.

I was hoping he had found his way back with Avatar, but was disappointed.

Avatar isn't a bad film. It isn't a great film either. And the hype is off-putting.

It felt more like a rehash of Disney's Pocahontas to me, except with blue cat people. I will admit that I really liked how they designed the natives' bodies and such. It's a shame they had to be so cliched.

I have issues with his "king of the world" crap. (So did Linda Hamilton apparently.) He owes waaaaay too much of his career to ILM to be spouting off like that.

                      I'm struggling with that one.

                      Now the "A-Team"? Hell yeah!

That is hilarious! Not only did he rip-off another movie, but, once again, he owes most of the movie's success to ILM!

You do know that the story in Pocahontas wasn't "fresh and new" either, right? It's not like the story wasn't ancient to begin with.

I honestly think half of the people who hate Avatar would be just fine with it if it weren't for the stupid freaking overblown hype machine.

Oh, and Legacy Effects are the people most responsible for the work on the Na'vi and the Exoskeletons and they've been working with Cameron since Terminator. They did all of the 3D modeling and design work.

All movies should be completely original! After all if Shakespeare could come up with that many ideas all on his own, the movie industry should be able to do it as a group.

(Yes, that was deliberate. I am aware that Shakespeare was not very original.)

The story isn't bad, just nothing new or surprising.

Exactly what I thought when I saw it...This is essentially Pocahontas as rewritten by the Kirk-era Star trek writers....

It IS damn pretty, tho....not a bad flick at all.
