Am I odd in that I would not buy a wii or Ipod without being certain that I wanted one? I mean, they aren't cheap and if I wasn't 100% sure, I wouldn't get it.
not at all; it just shows that you consider what you're buying before making or not making the purchase.

too logical for the sc, however; doesn't fit in with the 'i want i want' mentality.
    look! it's ghengis khan!
Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

Ah, the retail rental customer.... I've actually heard people discuss this tactic right there in the store.

SC1: "I know Dad's coming to visit for the Super Bowl, but I can't afford the really nice TV."
SC2: "No problem. Just buy it now and return it when Dad leaves. Get the really nice bedding set, too, so Mom won't bitch about that ratty crap you've got in the guest room now."
      SC1: "I can do that?"
SC2: "So long as you keep your receipt, they have to take it all back."

Yes, yes you can, but NO, no you shouldn't! You want to rent things, there are stores for that!
Sadly I've had salespeople recommend it to me :/
I was looking at an item (forget what) that I needed for a weekend because mine was broken and was just checking prices, I was told that the store "does offer a 14 day return policy if you are unsatisfied for any reason" :/

Seriously, NOT a sales tactic and WILL get the return policy reduced/ended like happened at Costco

I think I would have spoken to that guy's manager.

I suspect he's getting a commission on sales, and he doesn't get hit for returns on things he gets out the door. Totally scuzzy thing to do and not in the stores best interests at all.

        ^-.-^

I sell high end BBQ pits, most with 20 year to lifetime warranties on the grills and or expensive parts. Had two guys yesterday with worn out burners, same kinds of grill, burners have a 20 year warranty.

Guy number one had his receipt, and just had to pay the $20 shipping for the new burners to be sent to us.

Guy number two did not save his receipt, and could not get warranty burners. He even said to me "Who saves their receipt?" I told him anyone who buys a $2000 BBQ pit and wants anything warrantied on it.
I see this all the time. I support very high end computer parts.

If you're buying a burger at a fast food place you don't really need to save your receipt.

If you're buying a $4000 piece of computer hardware, you damn well better save your receipt!

Consider the worth thing that happens if you lose your receipt. Ohnoes, you're out $1 for your value meal burger, ohnoes. Or you could be out $4k.

I heard a story, actually several stories, from a guy working at the customer service desk at an IKEA. A woman comes in wanting to get a refund on a 5 NKR plastic spoon. Fine enough, until she tells CSM that she just drove 30 km to get it done...

For the average challenged customer, spending well over an hour t/r and a small fortune in petrol to get a measly 5 kroner back is just insane.. And shows the kind of mentality people have when "I can get some money back", barring completely the expenses involved.

              Tis smart.

A former co-worker was once a mechanic at a Jeep dealership, a doctor brought in his brand new Cherokee (early 90's) for service, and asked FCW what the "extra shifter" was for.

You know, the one that activates 4 wheel drive.

Turns out he had no idea what this vehicle could do, all he knew is that his neighbor had one and he wanted it too.

He could have done his research, or test driven, asked questions and been sure he wanted it before dropping his money on it.

The other possibility with this is that they're depending on people not being on the ball enough to remember to return it within the window. (14 days being a shorter one). Yes, they'll have to deal with people yelling at them about returns, but there's also a large percentage of the population that goes "shit, I screwed up. Oh well". Although, in theory, they're less likely to be the ones using the return policy as a rental.
