so dont snap your fingers to get my attention

i was already still with a customer at the register and this lady starts snapping her fingers and asking me a question, yet i cant hear her.

she wanted someone to open the fragrance case for her, so i finished with my customer and went over to do so.

i ask, "which one do you want?"
    her : " i dont know"

    well thats always good.

she wants to smell some of them (we dont have testers, this isnt macy's) yet the ones she wanted to smell were sealed.

she asks how much they are, thinking they are 50% off, and i explain only the ones with the tags are buy 1 get 1 50% off

she kept on trying to get ones that werent on sale.

she finally left without getting any perfumes. wtf

    Stupid kid/smart kid

i ring up a lady and what i presume her granddaughter . i guess the little girl prob not even 2, but im not good with ages, had wanted to hand me the money herself. so grandma lifts the girl up to the counter and the girl tried putting the money in the debit reader. the grandma tells me that when she goes shopping with her mother the mom always pays with a card and lets the girl do it. poor girl doesnt know how money works

the smart kid was one who was with her mother and this was the brief convo at the debit reader
G: did you want cash back?
    M: no
    G: well you hit yes

HAHA idiot....happens ALL THE TIME, though no one ever gets pwned

Ugh one time i was stressed at work i did a finger snap to a co-worker! She said 'You seriously didn't just do that did you?' I gave her the deer in headlights look and apologized profusely. Now I joke about it as what only asshats or ignorant bastards do :P

I only remember whistling and finger snapping while I was waiting tables.

I can't fathom why anyone would do it to ANYONE period, but it was especially rude because I was usually taking an order or carrying several plates of food and trying to avoid running into my coworkers or out of control kids.

at least customers have an excuse - they think they're paying you to make them the center of the universe...

how ever my mother does not have that excuse when she clinks her wedding rings against her glass to get my attention, when we have a number of guests over, and many conversations going on at once - add to this that i'm sitting between people that i would have to climb over to get her glass and refill it, and any of the people there would gladly get her a refill, if she would just ask "please"

If a SC whistles or snaps their fingers to get my attention i do my best to ignore them until they can learn to speak. Don't like it? Too bad. Lear to talk.

I went out with my nephew to eat once at Chili's. He had to get the server's attention for something, and I was mortified when he snapped and whistled at him! I gave him a dirty look and said, loud enough for the server to hear, "That's just rude! He's not a dog!" He behaved much better after that.

Only time I snap my fingers is if I'm trying to remember a word and my brain won't let me.

I think people do it because they see actors do it in movies. Monkey See, Monket Do kinda thing.

Right in line with everyone else, if someone snapped at me or whistled at me, I ignore them. Period. Even if I glance over, and my eye happens to catch them, I look around as if I'm looking for the dog they summoned, even going so far as to crouch down and look under things to find the dog, right in the line of sight of the guy who whistled / snapped. The conversation usually goes like this.

Them: What are you doing? Didn't you hear me call you?
Me: No, I was too busy looking for the dog that you lost.
Them: What? I didn't lose any dog. Are you high?
Me: Well, people only snap or whistle at dogs. You're definitely not dumb enough to whistle or snap at me, so you must have a dog here.
--- It usually ends here ---
Them: Are you calling me dumb?
Me: It's not really up to me. I'm not the one snapping or whistling.
                    Them: I'm calling your manager.
Me: You mean the one who just got snapped at by another customer and doesn't give them a thing they want, or the one that wants to see all employees treated like people? Take your pick.
                    Them: Then I'm calling corporate!
Me: Ah, the lady who worked in retail since she was 16, and got snapped at more times than she'd care to admit? Yep, looking good. So is there anything I can help you with?
                    Them: Fuck you.
Me: Not during store hours. Not that I'm not flattered.
SC: "Are you new or something?"
Me: "Yes. Your planet is very backwards I hope you realize."

I must admit I have snapped at people. However this is only after other means of trying to get their attention. As in: Hey! Hey <name>! You there? <waves hands in general direction> <snaps fingers>. If that doesn't work I get the flare gun....

I am curious, is it considered bad etiquette to simply raise a hand to indicate you want your server to come to the table for something? That's what I always do in noisy and/or crowded restaurants.

I really wouldn't mind. It's not like you're hooting and hollering or anything. Plus, it couldn't hurt to acknowledge them and say "Hi again! Could I also please get .... " or "I'm sorry to trouble you, but please could...."

Yeah, they'd love you for that, I hope. Better than the rest of the crowd, anyway. Because it doesn't really matter how they get your attention, as long as what comes next is of redeeming worth. All it is is an attention getter, though mostly after the first impression.

I admit to having used a short whistle *once*

I had total laryngitis, absolutely no voice whatsoever. I decided to sit at the counter and it was fairly busy, but I had already written a note explaining I had no voice, and did a short attention grab whistle with a hand raised, and handed over the note. No voice sucks when you are alone =(

Pretty sure I mentioned the recent incident where a customer whistled for me to come help them.

I was on break, sitting in the food court, chatting with the FDLP, and as I'm heading back up to the front line to get back to work, the SC walks up with something that needed loading assistance. She starts whistling for me. It takes me a moment to realize that she was actually doing this (I'd only ever HEARD of people doing it, never actually experienced it), and then another moment to realize it was directed at me. I ignored her until she started with the "Hey!" calls, whereupon I glance back.

She asks for help loading the whatever-it-was, but I tell her "Sorry, I'm on my break," and am backed up by the FDLP, who confided in me later that he was pissed she'd whistled at me, too. The store got someone else to help her.
