We had an elderly couple stay a few days ago, they checked in stayed in their room a few moments and then left. Our shipment of this week's TV Guide had come in and I was placing them in the rooms. I got to their room I noticed they had taken an outdoor ashtray into their room and had left a candle burning inside of it.

Yes a candle left burning unattended in a cheap plastic ashtray almost too small for it (they jammed it in there). I blew it out and went back to cleaning. An hour later the couple returned and this conversation ensued

SC Wife: Did you blow our candle out?
    Me: Yes ma'am I did
SC: Why, it's a scented candle! We wanted the room to smell nice when we got back.
Me: You are not supposed to leave a candle unattended I wanted to make sure your stuff didn't get destroyed in a fire. (Translation: I will not let you endanger my only source of income with your stupidity)
    SC: Oh........

Oh...every candle I have ever bought has a sticker warning you not to leave a candle unattended. Not to mention in an inferior holder like a cheap ashtray. Some people boggle the mind. It's called common sense people, Learn It, Live It, Love It.

Yes, but when they start putting out knives with "WARNING: SHARP" printed on the box, you eventually start tuning out warnings on any product.

Though, yes, that couple was enormously reckless leaving a candle behind in something that's not designed to hold it up. Heck, even when I have a real holder I don't leave behind anything with a flame.

I think that perhaps the defining warning was 'product will be hot after heating'.

Either people dont expect heat transfer in an oven or they beleive in a mystical force transfer so the product will be hot straight out the box, whilst seconds before the product was in a fridge.

You might want to check out those packaged (crappy) chef knives that walmart carries.

I'm (thankfully) about 8000 miles too far away from a Wal Mart at the moment. Can you give me a hint?

It's been a while so I can't quote it. It had warnings well beyond "sharp". Made me for the state of stupidity of people. Because we all know if it's on the warning label, someone did it.

Oh, man, couldn't you have reported them for that? I mean, they were endangering the whole building.

I had a roommate that left a candle burning once (that I caught) and I read him the riot act over it. Why? Because one time I was present when a candle in a glass ashtray burned down, and exploded the ashtray, throwing hunks of burning waxed glass shards all over.

I don't even really like burning candles when I'm around, anymore.

Yea, but you are really close to China where most of that stuff is made.

My mother is a candle freak, she has to have every size, every color, every scent of every candle ever made. I despise lit candles, and when I used to live at home, whenever mom was in the bathroom or upstairs and the whole room was illuminated with those things, I'd go around and blow out each and every one. Then she'd come back into the room and lay it into me about blowing them out.

One day she had one on the coffee table and the dog was playing with a toy, her tail wagging at 100mph. Of course, there were about 5 times where she came thisclose to either knocking the candle over or setting her tail on fire.

I've never liked candles. For some reason, everyone in my whole extended family knows I hate candles, but I get shit tons of them at Christmas and my bday every year. So I arrange them around my living space and just never light them. I can't stand any type of fire (except for lighters to light ciggies). I am a big paranoid freak of fires and freak accidents.

The candles look just as pretty not lit, I swear

Back on topic now....what a bunch of dumbasses. I wonder if they set candles in cheap ashtrays at home? If they do, maybe it's some time for nature to take its course....

You could always put them on a garage sale. Sell them for 25¢-$1.00 each, watch them get bought up by candle-lovers and make a little money for yourself!

Back OT, hasn't that idiot ever heard of solid air fresheners (such as Glade or Renuzit)? They do just as good a job of freshening a room and are a hella lot less hazardous than an open flame!
