  • We did not "raise" the price

When a sale ends, and a product goes back to its regular price, would you say that the store has "raised" their prices?

If you are a reasonable person, you would answer "No".

But this guy was not a reasonable person. He stood in my store for ten minutes arguing with me about this.

Him: I got this for $9.95 last time!

Me: Yes, you probably did. That product was on sale for several weeks, but unfortunately that sale has since ended. It is now back to its regular price of $11.45.

Him: So you raised the price!

Me: No, we ended the sale. We lowered the price for several weeks as part of a promotion, but that promotion has since ended.

Him: So you jacked the price up, then.

Me: No, we removed the discount and the product is back to its regular price. The price is no higher than it was originally.

Him: You're arguing semantics with me now. You raised the price, and you won't admit it.

    Me: .....

Him: Are you going to give me this for $9.95 or what?

    Me: No.

He ended up paying full price, despite me showing him several other similar products under $10.

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

Sometimes it's just easier to nod and smile, while seething inside of course. Good for you for not giving in and giving it to him at the lower price though!

Well, if you consider "sale has ended" and "store raised its price" to be the same thing...I mean, the store is selling the item for more than it had been. But that's not even close to being worth a ten-minute argument. I see the guy's point. It's a stupid one, but I see it.

I think my response would be "Okay fine, we raised our prices. You gonna buy that bottle of wine or should I show you where the Thunderbird is?"

Ugh, I get these people all the time. I usually just keep nodding my head until they go away.

But if I'm feisty that day I will argue them away. ;-)

This is along the lines of my thinking. But no matter what terms you use to describe it, your company has a perfect right to do whatever it wants with the price. He doesn't like it? He can shop elsewhere. Reminds me of how some woman was complaining that we don't take back opened makeup, but Malwart does. My response? "Malwart is free to make it's own decision regarding returns. But we don't do that here.."

I've always thought that the above last part was humorous. My Mom used to say, after I wanted to do something that everybody else did, "If they all jumped off a cliff, would you want to do that, too?"

If after I explain it several times the SC still insists i usually just play along in hopes they just go away. Ironically I have problems with the SALE prices sometimes and they we didn't lower our prices.

                          Our receipts say:
                          Item desc $2.00
                          Savings -$1.00
                          You pay $1.00

Even somehow half the time they miss the savings/you pay lines.

The guy in this thread was just a idiot and probably knew what he was doing after being told the sale ended and just failed at trying to get it at the sale price.

Anyways a company does not have the "perfect right" to do whatever it wants with the price, they have to go by market value. When they do whatever they want and start playing around with the price and overcharge people that's called price gouging and companies can get fined/have lawsuits filed for criminal charges like say Ralph's here in Los Angeles http://www.eatdrinkandbe.org/article...12_law_grocery. Ralph's is big here and some are notorious for drastically fluctuating prices and it's bs. I can understand couple of mixups but they have a track record for doing whatever they want with their prices. I live right next to a Ralph's in a neighborhood with many young actors, dancers and artist types so you know the Ralph's around here is taking full advantage. I can drive to go someplace else but it is LA and nothing is really that cheap.

That's not the same thing at all.

There's a massive difference between making something a stupidly high price and actively lying about the volume of an item that is being offered for sale. If they had accurate weights on the pre-packaged goods and just charged a higher rate, then there would be no case. A company is perfectly free to price itself out of existence.
